Softball drops doubleheader to Lopers

Jets fall 11-10 in game one, 12-6 in game two

 
WICHITA- The Jets hosted Nebraska Kearney to close out the weekend. Yesterday, the Jets split with Fort Hays State where they took their win 2-1 in game one. In game one against the Lopers, the Jets fell short at 11-10. In game two, the Jets fell 12-6. 
 
Game One: NU 10, UNK 11
-Katelyn Westover started in the circle for the Jets. In the first inning, Westover and the Jets defense faced three batters, retiring them all. In the bottom of the first, AJ Borja led off the inning earning a walk. Tori Waggoner was next up, pushing Borja over to second with a sac bunt. Later, Gianna Navarro doubled to center to score Borja. This run gave the Jets a 1-0 lead heading into the second. The Jets defense held the Lopers at zero through the second. In the bottom half of the inning, Lauren McNaught led off with a single. McNaught would later advance to second after a passed ball. A walk drawn by Kayla Lopez followed by a single by Lani Dryden loaded the bases. Waggoner stepped up to the plate, sneaking a grounder past the shortstop to single and push two runs across the plate. This RBI gave the Jets a 3-0 lead heading into the third. In the top of the third, the Loper's offense added six runs. A grand slam added four of those six runs. The Lopers ended the inning with the 6-3 lead. 
- UNK was next to add a run. The Lopers added one run off of three hits in the top of the fourth to take the 7-3 lead. In the fifth inning, UNK put three more on the board to take their lead to 10-3. Malie Noda led the fifth inning off with a single. Noda then advanced the third after a sac bunt by McNaught and later a passed ball. Lopez then scored Noda to make it 10-4. In the top of the sixth, UNK added one more run to extend their lead back out to seven at 11-4. The Jets were able to cut into the deficit in the sixth with an RBI single from Navarro that added one run. This made it 11-5, Lopers. The Lopers then walked in the next Jets run to make it 11-6. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lopez singled to right and scored two runs to make it 11-8. Then, Dryden singled to keep the inning going and fill the bases again. Borja then scored two more runs for the Jets with a single to cut the deficit to just one run, 11-10. The Jets were able to hold the Lopers in the top of the seventh inning, keeping the deficit at just one run. Reghann Fairbairn led the Jets off in the final inning with a single. Travia Smith pinch ran for Fairbiarn and advanced to second off of a sac bunt from Navarro. However, the Jets were unable to score Smith from second. The Lopers took the game, 11-10. 
 
Player Notes:
-Lopez brought in three RBIs. 
-Borja, Waggoner and Navarro all added two RBIs a piece.
 
Game Two: NU 6, UNK 12
-The Lopers put up a big first inning, scoring four runs off of four hits. UNK had the 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. The Jets answered in the bottom half of the inning. Waggoner doubled to left , which was followed by a wild pitch where she advanced to third. Fairbairn then hit a sac fly to right field that scored Waggoner to make it 4-1. In the top of the second, the Lopers continued their hot hitting, scoring two off of two hits to make it 6-1. The Jets were held scoreless in the bottom of the second. Then, in the top of the third the Lopers scored their seventh run with a solo home run. In the bottom half of the inning, Lopez led off with a single. Dryden followed this up with a walk. Borja then loaded the bases with an infield single. With the bases loaded, Waggoner singled which scored the Jets second run. The Lopers then walked in the Jets third run to make it 7-3. A single by Navarro loaded the bases again. This was followed by a single by Noda that scored the Jets fourth run. The Lopers defense made an error on the next play that allowed the Jets to score two. This error by the Lopers brought the Jets back within one run at 7-6. The Lopers finally escaped the inning allowing five runs on five hits. In the top of the sixth, the Lopers added three runs off of four hits to extend their lead to 10-6. Both the Jets and Lopers were held scoreless in the sixth inning, keeping it a 10-6 contest heading into the final inning. The Lopers tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh to take their lead out to 12-6 on two hits and two errors by the Jets defense. The Jets were unable to cut into the deficit in the seventh, allowing the Lopers to take the game 12-6. 
 
Player Notes:
- Fairbairn led the Jets with two RBIs. 
- Waggoner went 2-4 from the plate with 1 RBI and a double. 
- Navarro added two hits on four appearances. 
-Lopez added two hits of three with one double. 
 
The Jets wil head to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. Then the Jets hit the road next weekend to face Central Missouri on Friday at 2 and 4 PM. Then will head over to Emporia State on Saturday for a 12 and 2 PM doubleheader.
