NWOSU takes both from Jets with late home run

Alva, Okla. -Softball played the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers in their last non-conference doubleheader of the season. Game one ended 8-14 in favor of the Rangers. Then, the Jets dropped the second game 7-8 with a walk off three-run home run. 

Game 1: NU 8, NWOSU 14
AJ Borja hit a lead off single and advanced to second on an error, getting within scoring distance with no outs recorded. A sacrifice bunt from Tori Waggoner advanced Borja to third. Then, a single to right field from Reghann Fairbairn scored Borja to give Newman an early lead. Following that, Malie Noda earned a walk to put two runners on base with only one out recorded. A third Jet single in the opening inning, this time from Hannah Nordby, batted in Fairbairn for Newman's second run. Hayley Bonython's third double of the season scored both runners to set the score at 4-0. Kayla Lopez's single helped Bonython in scoring the Jets' fifth run before the last out was recorded. Kinyon DeCorte started on the mound for Newman. NWOSU scored two runs off of a single, a double and a walk in the bottom of the first. The Jets kept their bats hot in the top of the second. Madi Canez started the top half of the second frame with a double to right center. She was batted in by Borja's third triple of the season. Then, a single by Waggoner scored AJ. Tori advanced to second on a wild pitch and got close enough to score Newman's eighth run after a second single from Nordby. In the bottom of the second, the Jets held the Rangers scoreless and only allowed a hit. In the third. Lani Dryden and Canez earned free bases with a walk and a hit by the pitch, but were unable to score before the end of the half inning. NWOSU cut down the Jets lead to only one run in the bottom of the third scoring five runs from four singles, a double, and an error. Zoe Fulks entered the game for DeCorte before the end of the third. In the fourth, neither team was able to score. Dryden got a single to right center in the top of the fifth, but the Jets couldn't score her. Two walks, a single, and a free base gave the Rangers a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Maddie Rae Romo subbed in for Fulks with two outs recorded. Then, the Rangers added three runs from a home run to left center. After 5, NWOSU led 8-13. Newman was held off to no hits or runs in the top of the sixth. The Rangers added another run from a double that scored a runner that got on base with a walk. The Jets couldn't score in the top of the seventh and saw the game end 8-14.

-Borja goes 2-3 with a triple and scores two runs.
-Bonython hits a double and adds two RBIs.
-Nordby gets two hits and bats two runs in.

Game 2: NU 7, NWOSU 8
Borja continued her good form with a single to right field in the first at bat for Newman of the second game. The Rangers denied them from scoring, recording three quick outs. Paola Zamacona started on the mound for Newman and struck out the first batter she faced. Then, a walk, a single, and a double scored two runs for the Rangers. Zamacona ended the inning striking out a batter. The Jets couldn't get on base in the top of the second. NWOSU used their momentum to add two runs to their tally and open their lead to four runs. Zamacona recorded two more strike outs in the bottom of the second. A walk and an error got Borja and Waggoner on base in the top of the third. A single by Fairbairn and an error by the pitcher scored both runners, reducing the deficit by half. Zamacona and the Jets' defense held the Rangers scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. In the fourth, only Lauren McNaught was able to get on base with a bunt, but no one was able to score. In the fifth frame, Hayley Bonython earned a walk with only one out recorded. Dryden, Noda, McNaught, and Kayla Lopez all hit consecutive singles to score three runs and take the lead. Then, an earned walk by Canez and a single from Borja scored the Jets' sixth run. The Rangers couldn't answer in the bottom half, recording three fly outs. Waggoner hit a lead off single in the sixth, but a great defensive effort from the Rangers denied them from scoring. Two singles and a double scored NWOSU's fifth run to leave a 6-5 score after six innings played. A walk, an error, and a single by Madi Canez helped Lauren McNaught score Newman's seventh run of the game in the top of the seventh. Then, two walks and a home run gave the Rangers the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Player Notes:
-Borja went 2-4 from the plate with a run and an RBI.
-McNaught hit 2-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
-Zamacona struck out five batters.
