Softball comes up short in doubleheader against ESU

Jets return home Friday for Senior Day

EMPORIA, Kan.- The Jets closed out their weekend of competition against Emporia State. Game one went to the Hornets through five innings, 12-4. The Jets fell just short in game two, 5-4. 

Game One: NU 4, ESU 12
-The Jets were first to put runs up on the board. In the top of the first inning, Hayley Bonython hit a home run to right field that scored Tori Waggoner who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The Jets defense and starting pitcher Katelyn Westover held the Hornets to just one hit through two innings, keeping the Jets lead at 2–0. The Hornets would go on to score five runs in the bottom of the third inning off of three hits to take the 5-2 lead. The Jets chipped into the deficit in the top of the fourth. Reaghann Fairbairn led the inning off with a single to right. Fairbairn would later score off of an error by the Hornets defense, making it a 5-3 contest. The Hornets extended their lead to 8-3 off of four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Jets continued to chip away at the Hornets lead. In the top of the fifth inning, AJ Borja led off the inning with a double to left field. A single by Bonython would later score Borja to make the score 8-4. ESU would go on to end the game in five innings after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets took game one, 12-4

Player Notes:
- Bonython led with three RBIs, adding her first home run of the season.
- Borja went 2-2 from the plate, scoring once. 

Game Two: NU 4, ESU 5
- The Jets found the early lead in game two with Bonython reaching on a single in the first inning. This single was followed by Fairbairn reaching on a catcher's interference call. Later, a fielding error by the Hornets would allow Bonython to score and give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Kinyon DeCourte and the Jets defense allowed just three hits through the first two innings to keep the Jets lead at one run. The Hornets took the lead from the Jets after scoring three runs in the bottom of the third off of three hits. This gave ESU the 3-1 lead. The Hornets added onto their lead in the fourth inning with two hits that scored two runs, taking their lead to 5-1. In the top of the fifth, Fairbairn homered to right center to cut into the deficit, making it 5-2. The Jets added another run in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to just two runs. A sacrifice fly by Fairbairn scored Borja who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. The Jets came within one run in the top of the seventh. Malie Noda doubled to right to start off the inning. This was followed by a Lauren McNaught single. With runners on first and third, a grounder by Madi Canez scored the Jets fourth run. The Jets were unable to push anymore runs across the plate, resulting in a one run loss to the Hornets. ESU took game two, 5-4. 

Player Notes:
- Fairbairn led the Jets with two RBIs. 
- Noda and McNaught both added two hits a piece. 
- Canez tallied an RBI.

The Jets return home next Friday to celebrate Senior Day against UCO.
