WICHITA -Baseball played the series finale against the No. 3 Central Missouri Mules for their last contest of the season. Before the game, 13 seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program. In the final game of the season at McCarthy field, the Jets fell 9-3 to the MIAA regular season champions.
How It Happened:
Senior
Lance Elsen started on the mound for Newman in his last appearance as a Jet. The Mules went on to earn a walk and hit a home run to take an early two run lead. Senior
Eli Wohl hit a single in his final opening at bat for Newman. Then,
Anthony Cannavino reached first on a fielder's choice and Senior
Trent Trammell joined him on the bags with a single to right field. But the Mules recorded the third out before either one could score. The second inning went scoreless, with Elsen recording his first strike out, and Senior
Nick Chasey hitting a single to left field. The third went hitless and no team was able to score.
UCM started the fourth with a single and two stolen bases. Then, after Elsen's second strike out, the Mules scored their third run off of a ground out. In the bottom half of the frame,
Trent Trammell hit a lead off single and, after he stole second, Senior
Blake Mitchell scored him with a single to center field. After Mitchell's hit, the Jets had three consecutive singles from Senior
Pierson Gunnell, Chasey, and Nick Ely. Mitchell scored and Newman loaded the bases, but the Mules recorded a double play to deny the Jets from scoring any more runs. A double and three free bases scored UCM's fourth run. Senior
Cole Landgraf substituted Elsen on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced. A single scored two more Mules runners to leave a 6-2 score going into the bottom of the fifth. Wohl hit another lead off single, but it didn't lead to anything. Two good Jet defensive plays and Landgraf's second strike out retired the Mules. Newman couldn't get on base in the sixth.
Two free bases and a sacrifice bunt scored another run for Central Missouri. Nick Ely hit a double in the first at bat for Newman in the seventh and was later scored by a single from Cannavino. Through seven, the score was 7-3 in favor of the Mules. Neither team scored or got a hit in the eighth. With two outs recorded, Senior
Jared Newton entered the game to pitch. In the ninth, UCM added two more runs to their tally off of four hits to leave a final 9-3 score.
