JOPLIN, Mo.- Newman capped off their weekend MIAA slate against Missouri Southern. The Jets came up short, 71-63.
How it Happened:
-MSSU hopped out to a 7-0 lead to start the first quarter. Five straight points from the Jets brought the deficit to 9-5. A short 4-0 run from the Lions extended their lead to eight. A three-pointer from
Jaeden McMillin brought the Jets within five with under three to play in the opening quarter. The Lions responded with a three-pointer of their own to retake an eight point lead. Two free throws from McMillin closed out the first quarter. The Lions led after one, 18-12.
-Free throws from Martin started off the second quarter , bringing Newman within four. Martin would later score five straight for the Jets to make the deficit just two points at the eight minute mark. At the six minute mark , a three-pointer from McMillin closed the gap to one point. The Jets would tie the game at 29 all with 4:30 to play in the half. Later , Newman took the lead at 32-31 with just over three minutes remaining. To close out the half, MSSU retook the lead. Newman trailed 35-33 at the break. McMillin tallied 18 points in the half.
-A layup from
Paige Craft started the second half, tying the game at 35 all. A 10-0 run put together by MSSU would give them the 45-35 lead with 3:45 to play in the third. A basket by Martin stopped this offensive surge by the Lions. Martin would then score another basket, closing the gap to 45-39 with 2:35 on the board. To end the third quarter, MSSU held the 49-43 lead.

Valeriya Lioukina scored the first basket of the final quarter. A 6-0 Lions run would push their lead to 57-46 with just over seven minutes to play. A three-pointer by Craft took the deficit to seven with under six to go. Another basket by Craft took the game to a six point game. Later, a 4-0 run put MSSU on top 66-55 with under three to play. At the two minute mark,
Delainey Wylie hit from behind the arc to make it a 66-58 contest. With 27 seconds to go,
Dani Williams hit a three-pointer to make it a seven point game. Though the Jets battled, they would run out of time. The Jets would fall, 71-63.

-McMillin led all scorers with 22 points while adding seven rebounds.
