Wichita,KS - Newman secured a 2-1 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at Wilkins Field. The Jets finished with an 18-4 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.
How it Happened:
NU opened the first half with a series of chances, with Isaac Murie saving attempts by
Kaisei Nagayoshi at 1:29,
Ailton Fagner Da Silva at 10:13 and
Skylur Staley at 11:44 as the Jets also earned three corners in that stretch. After Ouachita Baptist earned a corner at 17:14, Fagner Da Silva scored at 18:38 to put Newman ahead 1-0, and the Jets added later shots from
Higor Werneck, Da Silva and
Richard Wiegand. The closing stretch featured fouls and yellow cards on both sides, but
Guilherme Borges saved a shot at 38:43 and OBU missed high at 43:07 as NU carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
At the start of the second half, Ouachita Baptist tied the match at 1-1 at 46:05 when Pau Ndaw Codina scored, and the Jets worked back into the attack with saved shots from Werneck at 51:59 and Fagner Da Silva at 60:08. Staley put Newman in front at 69:45, finishing off Da Silva's assist for a 2-1 lead. The half tightened from there with fouls and cards on both sides, while NU continued to create chances through a corner kick, shots from
Tomas Melon and Werneck, and a
Daiki Okada attempt saved at 90:00 as the Jets finished off the 2-1 win.
