ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Newman University women's bowling team continued its strong start to the season by capturing the Warhawk Classic championship Sunday, defeating host Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-0 in the championship match.

The Jets put together an impressive three-day performance, finishing atop the qualifying standings before winning back-to-back Baker matches in bracket play to secure the tournament title.

Newman opened the weekend with a 3-1 record in Baker match play. The Jets defeated Marian, 946-891, and Saint Anselm, 912-759, before earning a bye in the fourth round. Newman closed the day with a 932-823 victory over Alabama A&M. The lone setback came against Wisconsin-Whitewater, 933-878.

The Jets carried that momentum into traditional play on Saturday, posting a 4-1 record. Newman defeated McKendree (863-830), Western Illinois (892-840), Valparaiso (1,015-831), Lewis (985-894) and Carroll (938-762). Following two days of competition, the Jets sat atop the standings with a 7-2 record and a tournament-leading total pinfall of 9,238.

Needing one more victory Sunday morning to lock up the top seed, Newman defeated Quincy to improve to 8-2 and remain in first place after qualifying.

In bracket play, the Jets faced Marian in a best-of-seven Baker semifinal. Newman survived a tightly contested match, edging the Sabres 4-3 to advance to the championship round.

Awaiting the Jets was Wisconsin-Whitewater, the only team to defeat Newman during Baker qualifying. This time, however, Newman left little doubt. The Jets swept the Warhawks 4-0 to claim the Warhawk Classic title.

The championship marks another strong showing for Newman, which led the tournament after two days of competition and finished the weekend by winning three straight matches, including the decisive victory over the host team.
