Jets defeat Rangers in season opener

ALVA, Okla.- The Jets opened the 2026 campaign in Oklahoma facing Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Jets defeated the Rangers, 8-5 in extras. 

How it Happened:

- The first inning was left scoreless by both teams. The first runs were put on the board in the bottom of the second by the Rangers. Two hits scored two runs, to give NWOSU the early 2-0 lead. The next runs would come from the Rangers, with two more hits scoring two more runs in the bottom of the third. This gave the 4-0 advantage to NWOSU. The Jets offense was able to push across their first run of the contest in the fourth inning. Nicolas Ely and Thomas Munn both recorded singles in the inning. Ely's single scored the Jets first run, cutting the deficit to 4-1. 
- The Jets pushed across their second run in the top of the fifth. Kaynan Kaku singled to kick off the inning. An error by the Rangers on the next at bat allowed Kaku to advance to third. Kayden Dawson would then head to the plate, hitting a sacrifice fly that allowed Kaku to score. This put the Jets down 4-2 to end the top of fifth. The Rangers would extend their lead to 5-2 in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the sixth, Munn kicked off the inning with a single. Ely would then reach off a fielder's choice, putting Munn at second. Morris followed this up with a single, loading the bases. With the bases loaded, Kaku earned a walk to put the score at 5-3, NWOSU. The Jets bats continued to roll in the seventh inning. Dawson singled to start the inning. Mitchell would also single, putting runners on first and second. Later, Louis Coca would bat both Mitchell and Dawson around with a double, tying the game at 5-5. 
- Neither team would score in the eighth or ninth inning, forcing extras. In the top of the tenth inning, Ely walked and would later steal to reach second. Kaku would later single to left field that batted in Ely to take the 6-5 lead. Kaku would later steal second. Birch would come up to the plate, hitting the ball outside the outfield fence for a two run home run. This pushed the Jets lead to 8-5. The Jets defense, behind reliever Fran Montanez, would hold the Rangers off the board in the bottom half of the inning. Newman took the win, 8-5. 

Player Notes:
- Kaku, Coca, and Birch all recorded two RBIs apiece for the Jets. 
- Birch hit the Jets first home run of the season. 
- Maximus Moreno earned the win on the mound. 
- Montanez credited the save on the mound. 

The Jets are back in action this weekend, hosting MSU Denver for a four game series starting on Friday at 2 PM.
