Martin leads Jets with 39 points in overtime loss to No. 15 Pitt State

Alexis Martin ties program record with most points scored in a single game

WICHITA- The Jets hosted No.15 Pittsburg State on Saturday, February 7th. The Jets would fall short, 81-76. 

How it Happened:
- Carli Carlson kicked it off for the Jets with a three-pointer. The Jets took the lead 5-2 with a jumper from Paige Craft. The Gorillas and the Jets both had a strong offense, which would lead the teams to trade off baskets. Pitt State gained the lead with free throws. The Gorillas were able to extend their lead to five with a jumper by Kiraga. A layup and three-pointer by Alexis Martin began to close the gap. The Gorillas would stay on top, 21-18 at the end of the first quarter. 
- To open up the second, Pitt State extended their lead to six. Martin got the energy started for the Jets with back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 26. Dani Williams extended the lead with a three-pointer of her own. The Jets continued having strong offensive and defensive plays, maintaining their lead for the remainder of the quarter. Newman would lead after the half, 38-33. Martin led the Jets with 17 points in the first half. 
- Valeriya Lioukina got it started for the Jets after the half extending their lead to seven. Pitt State would then go on a 14-0 run themselves to take the lead, 47-40 with five minutes left in the quarter. Carlson and Craft answered and got the energy shifted to the Jets. A three-pointer by Martin would cut the lead to just one at the end of the third quarter. 
- To open the fourth quarter Lioukina would make a layup to take the lead, 52-51. Points would then go back and forth until the Gorillas would gain a five point advantage with four minutes remaining. Free throws by Martin helped the Jets tie the game at 59. Points would then go back and forth until Swearingen would make a free throw to give the Gorillas a two point lead with 32 seconds left. Martin would then make a layup with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 66. The Jets were able to force overtime, behind a huge block from Delainey Wylie as regulation came to a close. 
- Opening in overtime, Pitt State would go on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Free-throws by Martin would cut the lead to three, 73-70. A three point play by Adams would give the Gorillas a six point lead with 57 seconds remaining. Martin would then record her 36th point of the game to cut the Gorilla lead to four. Free throws by Alex Schreiner extended the Gorillas lead to six. Martin would then make a three-pointer making it her 39th point of the game and making the score 79-76 with 16 seconds left in the game. The Jets would be unable to tie up the contest in the remaining seconds. Newman would fall short, 81-76. 


Player Notes:
- Martin leads all scores with a career high of 39 points. 39 points from Martin tied the Jets program record for most points in a single game. This is also the most points scored by a Jet in MIAA play. 
- Carlson recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds, her first career double-double. 
- Wylie had three blocks.
