Jets Softball comes up short in doubleheader against SWOSU

WICHITA-The Jets hosted Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Tuesday, March 17th for a doubleheader. The Bulldogs would take game one, 8-6 and game two, 13-4.

Game one vs Southwestern Oklahoma State: NU 6, SWOSU 8
-Southwestern Oklahoma State struck first in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Jets answered in the bottom half. Lani Dryden doubled to right field and later scored on a pitching error, allowing Aspen Peterson to reach base and tie the game at 1-1. 
-Newman would take the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Malie Noda got things started with a solo home run, and later Emma Taylor delivered a three RBI double to right field to give the Jets a 5-1 lead.
-SWOSU cut the deficit in the top of the third, scoring three runs on three hits to pull within 5-4. Newman looked to respond in the bottom half after a single from Hannah Nordby and a walk by Laci Dryden put runners on, but the Jets were unable to score 
-The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring one run on two hits. Caine delivered an RBI single to bring home Taylor McMahon and even the score at 5-5. 
-Southwestern Oklahoma State took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs. Lusk delivered a three-run home run to put SWOSU ahead 8-5. Newman answered with a run in the bottom half. The Jets recorded back-to-back singles from AJ Borja and Hannah Nordby. Borja would later come home on an RBI groundout by Malie Noda. The Bulldogs would keep the lead at the end of the fifth inning. 
-After a scoreless sixth inning and seventh inning, the Bulldogs would keep the lead and take game one of the doubleheader, 8-6. 

Game two: NU 4, SWOSU 13
-Southwestern Oklahoma State took an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring one run. 
-The Bulldogs added to its lead in the top of the second inning, scoring one run on three hits to go up 2-0. Newman responded in the bottom half, loading the bases and scoring on an RBI walk by Kaila Kaahu to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Jets collected two hits in the inning.
-Southwestern Oklahoma State scored three runs on a triple by Wedel to extend their lead to 5-1 in the third inning. Newman loaded the bases with two outs after singles from Emma Taylor and Lauren McNaught and a walk by AJ Borja. However, the Jets were unable to score.
-A big double play in the top of the fourth by the Jets would leave the Bulldogs scoreless in the inning. Newman would score one run from Noda after Aspen Peterson reached on a fielding error, making the score 5-2.
-The Bulldogs were retired in order by Makenna Majors. Newman continued to cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Kaahu delivered the hit with a two-RBI single to center field, bringing home Borja and Lauren McNaught to make the score 5-4. 
-Southwestern Oklahoma State added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to extend their lead to 7-4. The Jets recorded two hits by Aspen Peterson and Kinley Powell. 
-Southwestern Oklahoma State broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning, scoring six runs to make the score 13-4. The Bulldogs would take game two, 13-4. 

Player Notes:
-Malie Noda recorded one home run, three hits, and 2 RBIs.
-AJ Borja tallied three hits and two runs.
-Taylor tallied three RBIs and two hits. 
-Lani Dryden added one hit, one run, and one double. 
-Peterson recorded two hit, one run. 

Newman Softball will get ready to host Central Missouri on Friday, March 20th starting at 2 PM.
