HAYS, Kan. — Newman University fell to Fort Hays State University with a final score of 17-7 on Saturday at Larks Park. The Jets recorded nine hits, including a home run, but the Tigers capitalized on a six-run fifth inning to secure the win.
How it happened:
Newman started strong in the first inning, with
Kaynan Kaku scoring on a double by
Peyton Mitchell, giving the Jets an early lead. However, Fort Hays responded with a three-run homer, leaving the inning with the Tigers leading 3-1.
In the third inning, Newman leveled the score as
Collin Morris hit a double to left center, driving in two runs. The inning closed with the score tied at 3-3.
Fort Hays regained the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left field, pushing the Tigers ahead 5-4.
The fifth inning saw Fort Hays extend its lead significantly, scoring six runs, including a sacrifice fly and a series of hits, to bring the score to 11-4.
Newman attempted a comeback in the sixth inning with a two-run homer by
Nicolas Ely, narrowing the gap. However, the Tigers added another run, maintaining a lead at 12-6.
Despite the Jets' effort in the seventh inning, including an RBI groundout by Ely, Fort Hays added five more runs, securing a commanding lead. The final score was 17-7 in favor of the Tigers.
