KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Newman lost to Truman State 3-0 (22-25, 9-25, 21-25) on Friday. The Jets hit .131 with 34 kills and five blocks, while Truman State finished at .245 and held a 7-1 edge in service aces. The Jets lost 3-1 to Maryville (MO) in Friday's second game, with set scores of 17-25, 18-25, 25-21, 13-25. The Jets claimed the third set but hit .104 for the match, while the Saints finished at .257.
GAME ONE
How it happened:
After a service error on the opening point, the Jets moved in front 4-1 on
Avery Kelley's kill from
Madalyn Hoot, an
Isabella Lamb block, a Bulldogs attack error, and
Reese Daugherty's ace. NU kept the lead through the middle of the set, getting kills from
Priscilla Raschen, Lamb,
Ashlyn Warburton,
Hannah Tymitz, and
Kierny Follmer to stay ahead 15-11. Truman State closed the gap and then scored five straight points from 16-13 down, tying the set on Jessie Julius' ace before going in front on a Newman attack error and stretching the lead to 18-16 on a Laci Neece kill. The Jets got back within 22-21 on kills by Kelley and Raschen, but TSU reached set point at 24-21 and, after Lamb's kill, Elise Gibson finished the set at 25-22.
Newman moved ahead 3-1 in the second set on two kills by Kelley and one from Lamb, all assisted by Hoot. Truman State answered with 10 straight points to take an 11-3 lead before Follmer stopped the run with a kill. The Jets cut it to 11-6 on a Raschen kill and a Bulldogs attack error, but TSU took 10 of the next 11 points to go ahead 21-7. After a Truman State service error made it 23-9, the Bulldogs closed the set on a Newman attack error and a Truman block for a 25-9 set score.
NU opened the third set with a Hoot kill from Lamb and a Kelley block for a 2-0 lead, but Truman State answered behind Elise Gibson and Jessie Julius kills and later moved in front 12-8 on Laci Neece's ace. The Jets worked back within 12-10 on kills by Kelley and Lamb, and used a Follmer kill and two Bulldogs attack errors to tie the set at 15-15. TSU went back ahead 20-17, but Newman pulled even at 20-20 with a Tymitz kill, an Adalyn Galbraith attack error, and Lamb's block on a Julius attack. Truman State took the next four points to reach 24-20, the Jets stayed alive on another Lamb kill, and Gibson finished the set for the Bulldogs, 25-21.
GAME TWO
How it happened:
NU recovered from an early 2-0 deficit in the opening set, getting kills from
Isabella Lamb and
Priscilla Raschen before
Kierny Follmer and
Madalyn Hoot put the Jets ahead 5-3. Maryville moved back in front at 8-7, and after
Ashlyn Warburton's kill brought the Jets within 10-9, the Saints scored seven straight points to stretch the margin to 17-9. The Jets got kills from Lamb and Raschen later in the set, but Maryville reached set point at 24-13. NU extended the set with four straight points, including kills by Raschen, Warburton and
Josie Weers, before the Saints closed the set 25-17.
The Jets traded points early in set two, getting kills from Weers, Lamb and Raschen to stay within 5-4 before the Saints built a 10-6 edge behind kills from Caroline Glastetter and Natalie Frazier and a Mallory Sell service ace. After Weers put down consecutive NU points to make it 12-9, the Saints pushed the margin to 17-10 with help from a Joanna Gillen ace and a Leslie Longanbach block. The Jets cut into the deficit with
MaddyLynn Shumway's service ace and later a run that included kills by Raschen and Warburton plus an Emma Keele attack error, pulling within 18-16. Maryville answered with three straight points to go up 21-16, and after back-to-back kills by
Charissa Ninan brought the Jets to 21-18, the Saints scored the final four points to take the set 25-18.
NU moved in front 6-3 early in the third set after a
Hannah Tymitz and Follmer block and a Saints setting error, but Maryville came back to tie it at 6-6. After the set was tied again at 9-9, Tymitz put the Jets back ahead with a kill, and Hoot's service turn helped stretch the lead to 14-9 with a Hoot kill, an
Avery Kelley kill, and a block by Kelley and Weers. The Saints erased a 15-10 deficit with five straight points, including a Hannah Patton service ace, before the teams traded points into a 19-19 tie. NU went back ahead on a service error and a Saints attack error, then took four of the final five points, closing the set 25-21 on Kelley's kill from Hoot.
After Weers answered the Saints' opening point of set four, Maryville scored four straight points behind kills from Emma Hoing and Caroline Glastetter to move ahead 5-1. Raschen put down two early kills for the Jets, including one that made it 7-4, but Maryville followed with four straight points featuring a Natalie Frazier kill, a Mallory Sell ace, and another Frazier kill for an 11-4 lead. NU got middle-set kills from Weers, Tymitz and Lamb, but the Saints kept answering and pushed the margin to 19-9 on a Leslie Longanbach kill. Tymitz added a late kill and the Jets scored twice on Saints attack errors at 24-12 and 24-13, but a Joanna Gillen and Glastetter block closed the set for Maryville, 25-13.
NU totaled 45 set assists in the game, surpassing its season average of 34.0. Additionally, the team achieved 47 kills, exceeding its season average of 37.1 and recorded 71 digs, which was above its season average of 55.0.
