ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Newman lost 3-0 to Missouri Western on Saturday at MWSU Fieldhouse. The Jets were held to 27 kills and a .157 hitting percentage, while the Griffons finished with 50 kills and hit .345.
How it happened:
NU broke a 3-3 tie with four straight points on
Charissa Ninan's serve, getting a block from
Hannah Tymitz and
Kierny Follmer and a Tymitz kill to move ahead 7-3. Missouri Western worked back to tie the set at 13-13, but the Jets answered with another Ninan service stretch that included a
Sky Miller kill for a 17-13 lead before the Griffons tied it again at 17-17. NU went back in front 21-18 on a Follmer ace and later led 22-20 after
Ashlyn Warburton's kill, but Missouri Western scored three straight points to take a 23-22 lead. A service error pulled the Jets even at 23-23, but the Griffons took the final two points, closing the set 25-23 on Taylor Russell's kill.
The Griffons scored the first five points of the second set, with Katelyn Diani-O'Day assisting kills by Emily Loy, Taylor Russell, and Holly Heldt before the Jets got on the board on a service error.
Isabella Lamb and Tymitz answered with kills for NU, and back-to-back Tymitz finishes brought the Jets within 8-4. Tymitz recorded three blocks. Missouri Western rebuilt the margin to 14-5 and later led 18-10 before a six-point run, pushed the set to 24-10. NU extended the set on a Griffons service error and a Warburton kill, but Heldt closed it with a kill to give the set to the Griffons.
The Jets scored first on a Miller kill from
Madalyn Hoot and led 2-1 after Lamb's kill, but Missouri Western moved in front and, after NU got within 5-4 on a service error, scored four straight points for a 9-4 lead. The Jets answered in short bursts, with Warburton and Miller kills making it 12-8 before
Avery Kelley's kill and a Tymitz-Follmer block brought NU within 15-11. Follmer has recorded three or more total blocks in three consecutive games. After the Jets later cut it to 19-15 on Miller's kill from Ninan, Missouri Western closed the set with six straight points to finish a 25-15 set.
