WICHITA, KS - Newman earned its first conference win of the season Friday, defeating Missouri Southern State 3-1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24) at Fugate Gymnasium.
Set 1 (MSSU 25, NU 13)
Missouri Southern jumped out to an early lead and used an eight-point run to take control of the opening set. The Jets found points from Priscilla Raschen, Sky Miller and Hannah Tymitz, but the Lions maintained the advantage and claimed the set 25-13.
Set 2 (NU 25, MSSU 20)
Newman responded with a strong start, building a 4-0 lead and later extending the margin to 16-9. Missouri Southern cut the deficit to one late in the set, but the Jets answered each challenge. A Madalyn Hoot ace and late kills from Miller and Isabella Lamb helped Newman even the match with a 25-20 win.
Set 3 (NU 25, MSSU 20)
After trailing 4-2, the Jets scored six straight points to seize momentum. Missouri Southern tied the set at 10-10, but Newman answered with key kills from Miller and Avery Kelley to regain control. The Jets maintained their lead down the stretch and closed out another 25-20 victory.
Set 4 (NU 26, MSSU 24)
Newman led early before the Lions rallied from a five-point deficit and eventually reached set point at 24-20. The Jets refused to fold. A Miller kill and ace sparked the comeback, while kills from Raschen and Lamb tied the set. Raschen gave Newman the lead at 25-24 before Kelley finished off the match-winning point in a 26-24 comeback victory.
