WICHITA, KS - Newman defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 3-1 on Tuesday at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets overcame a 21-17 deficit in the third set to move in front 23-21, then took the set 28-26 before finishing the match with a 25-18 fourth set. NU achieved a season-high 62 kills in the game, showcasing its offensive strength.
Set 1 (NU 25, NWOSU 20)
The first set stayed tight early. Newman moved in front 16-14 after a Lamb block and Kelley kill, but the Rangers took the next two points to tie it at 16-16. From there, Miller and Raschen put down kills, Raschen and
Kierny Follmer combined on a block, and a NWOSU setting error pushed the Jets ahead 20-16. The Rangers got back within 22-20, but Miller's kill and back-to-back service aces by Follmer closed the set for Newman, 25-20.
Set 1 (NWOSU 25, NU 18)
The second was also tight early, with Miller, Kelley, Follmer and Warburton recording kills as the Jets kept pulling even through a 9-9 score. NWOSU scored the next three points to move ahead 12-9, but Newman worked back within 13-12 behind a
Madalyn Hoot kill and a
Reese Daugherty service ace. The visitors answered to rebuild separation, moving from 16-14 to 19-14 on kills by Celia Mbaya, Kaylah Thomas and Mbaya. NU continued to side out with kills from Miller and Warburton, but the Rangers reached set point at 24-17 and finished the set on a Kemelly Baez Miecznikoski kill for a 25-18 result.
Set 1 (NU 28, NWOSU 26)
This set was a thriller, NWOSU built a 14-7 lead in the third set before Newman began to close the gap, getting kills from Lamb and
Josie Weers and a Miller-
Sophia Neihouse block during a stretch that made it 18-16. The Rangers moved back in front 21-17 on a service ace, but the Jets answered with six straight points, including three Kelley kills and Kelley block, to take a 23-21 lead. A Weers kill put Newman at 24-22, but NWOSU scored the next three points to move ahead 25-24. The Jets recovered with four of the final five points, tying it on a Rangers bad set, getting a block from Warburton, and closing the 28-26 set on kills by Neihouse and Daugherty.
Set 1 (NU 25, NWOSU 18)
The fourth set was close early until, after NWOSU moved in front 8-7 on Celia Mbaya's kill, Newman answered with kills from Warburton, Miller and Lamb and a block by Kelley and Miller to go ahead 11-8. The Rangers closed the gap from 14-10 to 14-13 on kills by Ivanny Blackwood, Kemelly Baez Miecznikoski and Tess de Zanet, but Lamb and Raschen answered with kills to move the Jets back to 16-13 before the visitors got within 16-15. From a 17-15 lead, NU took seven of the next eight points, with Neihouse recording two kills and Raschen, Miller and Warburton each adding one as the Jets reached 24-16. NWOSU scored the next two points, but an attack error by Emily Felix closed the set for Newman, 25-18.
The Jets totaled 54 set assists, exceeding their season average of 36.06.
