Max Hutson is entering his third season as an assistant coach for the Newman baseball program in 2016-17.
Hutson coordinates recruiting and is the pitching coach for the Jets, and oversees the strength and conditioning of the pitchers.
Hutson has been part of the winningest two-year stretch for the Newman baseball team since moving to Division II, as the Jets have won 51 games over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, including seeing the team go 28-20 in 2016. Lucas Schauer earned Hutson his first all-conference award winner in 2016.
The Newman pitching staff dropped over a run off of its team ERA from 2015 to 2016. Schauer put together an 8-3 record in 13 starts, including a Heartland Conference-best eight complete games, while reliever Corey Mondello manufactured a turnaround into the best bullpen arm with a 2.31 ERA.
Prior to coming to Newman, Hutson served as pitching coach for two seasons at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Illinois where he coached and nine players who went on to the NCAA Division I level.
Previously, Hutson spent his time on the bench at Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas under head coach Rob Ramseyer, and at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana assisting pitching coach Tyler Herbst. While working at Indiana State, Hutson helped coach six professional players, including four pitchers.
Hutson had two stints in summer college baseball, one in 2009 and the other in 2012. In 2009, Hutson was the pitching coach for the Wichita Sluggers of the Walter Johnson League, helping lead them to a National Baseball Congress World Series appearance. Hutson was the pitching coach for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in 2012, guiding the pitching staff to league-best marks in wins, ERA, strikeouts, walks and hits.
As a player, Hutson was a part of a successful run in Wichita State history. From 2005-09, the Shockers made the NCAA tournament in each season, hosted a regional and super regional in 2007, while also advancing to another super regional in 2008. WSU won the regular season Missouri Valley Conference title in 2007 and 2008, and the conference tournament in 2005, 2008 and 2009. Hutson played with current major leaguers Mike Pelfrey and Connor Gillaspie.
