Jose Lugo is entering his fourth year as the head coach of the Newman volleyball program in 2021-22.
Lugo brought over a decade of coaching experience with him, and took over a program that had won 57 matches over the previous three seasons.
Lugo has made four stops as an assistant at Division I schools, and was the head coach of Grand Canyon’s beach volleyball program for a season. He was an assistant at Fresno State for the past two seasons, where he worked with setters and blockers, and helped the team finish the 2017 season with the 17th-most blocks per set in the nation.
Prior to his stint in California, he was a volunteer assistant with both the indoor and beach programs at Arizona State in 2015-16, helping the indoor team to the NCAA tournament and the top beach pair to All-Pac-12 honors.
Lugo spent the 2014-15 season at Grand Canyon, where he coached a pair of AVCA Collegiate Beach All-Americans and led the Lopes to a national ranking. As an assistant with the indoor team, he helped teach the WAC’s Freshman of the Year.
After a five year spread between South Mountain Community College and another volunteer assistant position with Arizona State, Lugo spent three seasons as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth from 2011 through 2013.
In addition to his time in the college ranks, Lugo has extensive experience at the club level, including USA Volleyball High Performance youth teams and camps for the past 10 years. He graduated from Arizona State in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.
