AUSTIN, Texas - A late rally fell short as the Newman volleyball team's three-match conference winning streak came to an end in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) loss to St. Edward's Thursday night inside the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin, Texas.
St. Edward's (17-5, 8-0) hit .303 in the first set, and stole the early momentum with a 25-17 win. Newman (7-17, 3-4) bounced back in the second set, forcing the Hilltoppers to commit six attack errors, but the Jets fell three points short in a 25-22 loss.
The Jets refused to go quietly, posting a .167 hitting percentage and committing just four attack errors on their way to a 25-22 win in the third set. Newman then fell behind early in the fourth set, and rallied from a 24-19 match, but fell short once again in a 25-22 loss that sealed the match for St. Edward's
Senior 
Lauren Poe led the Jets offensively, finishing with 12 kills on 47 attempts. Freshman 
Sarah Bailey added 10 kills on 25 attempts, and each added three digs to the cause. Junior 
Chelsey Potter found herself playing more of a defensive roll in the match, leading the Jets with 19 digs. Senior 
Angie Bennett added 17 digs, while junior 
Abbee Widler finished with 10.
Senior 
Caroline Painter was Newman's leading setter with 27 assists in the match. Junior 
Ashley Myers added 10 assists in the loss.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 7-17 on the season, and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. Newman will be back in action Saturday when they take on Texas A&M International in a 1 p.m. contest in Laredo, Texas.
