EDMOND, Okla. - A balanced offensive attack helped the Newman volleyball team rally for a 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 20-18) come-from-behind win over Central Oklahoma Tuesday night Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla. Five Jets finished with double-digit kill counts in the Jets' second-straight road win.
Newman (9-17) found itself fighting from behind early in the match. The Jets posted a .371 hitting percentage and committed just two attack errors in the opening set, but Central Oklahoma (11-14) edged out the 25-23 first-set victory.
The Bronchos turned it up a notch in the second set, forcing the Jets into eight attack errors and riding a .385 attack percentage to a more convincing 25-18 win to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The visiting Jets had only just begun. Newman gave up just 13 kills and forced 10 Broncho attack errors in the third set, and crawled back into the match with a 25-22 third set win. The Jets kept rolling in the fourth set, holding the Bronchos to a .071 attack percentage thanks to nine attack errors, and tied the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set to force the decisive fifth set.
Newman jumped out to a 3-0 set in the final set thanks to two opening kills from
Chelsey Potter. The Bronchos fought back, tying the set briefly at 4-4, but the Jets countered with a 4-1 rally to take an 8-5 lead into the side change. Newman maintained at least a two-point lead until UCO tied the set at 11-11. The two teams traded points from that point on, and nothing had been settled by the 15-15 mark.
Neither team wanted to give up, as each team took one point leads, but by the 18-18 point the match had still not been decided. A
Sarah Bailey kill gave Newman a 19-18 edge, and a block assist by
Brianna Witsman and
Allison Fox finally gave the Jets the 20-18 advantage they needed to win the match, 3-2.
Chelsey Potter led the Jets both offensively and defensively, netting her eighth double-double of the season with a 15-kill, 17-assist performance. Carolin0 e Painter added a 56-assist, 11 dig double-double of her own for her third double-double outing of the season.
Potter was one of five Jets with 11 or more kills.
Lauren Poe finished with 14 kills, while
Sarah Bailey added 13.
Brianna Witsman ended up with a career-high 12 kills on 22 attempts and just one attack error, while
Angie Bennett posted 11 kills in the Newman win.
Painter, meanwhile, was one of four different Jets to record 10 or more digs. Aside from Potter's 17 digs,
Amy Shorette added 13 digs, while
Abbee Widler finished with 10 digs.
As a team, the Jets posted a .260 hitting percentage, and out-blocked the Bronchos, 9-7. UCO committed 30 attack errors, while the Jets made 21 miscues.
With the win, the Jets improve to 9-17 on the season. They are back in action Thursday when they host St. Mary's in the annual Dig Pink event. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
