WBB Falls to Ouachita Baptist, 76-59

WICHITA - Rainey Nickel drained three three-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points, but the Newman women's basketball team lost its fourth-straight contest, dropping a 76-59 decision to Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.

Ouachita Baptist (5-3) made the first move, jumping out to a 13-5 lead less than four minutes into the game, thanks in part to a three ball from Domino Miller from WNBA range, and then some. Newman (1-7) wasn't ready to quit though. Over the course of the next eight mintues, the Jets strung together a 15-8 run of their own, and pulled to within one, 21-20, by the 8:55 mark of the opening half. Newman kept it a game, trailing by four or less for the next five minutes before a 6-1 spurt by the purple-clad Tigers gave them a six-point lead with two minutes to play. Two Brea Teeter free throws and a Melanie Brockleman lay-up slimmed the deficit down to two, 37-35, with a minute to play, but OBU's Angela Colliver scored the final three points of the half, including a lay-up in the final seconds, to give the Tigers the 40-35 edge at halftime.

A 5-0 spurt by the Jets to start the second half tied the game at 40-40 less than 90 seconds into the final frame, but that was all the motivation the Tigers needed to put their foot on the gas pedal. Ouachita Baptist engineered an 18-1 run over the next nine minutes to take complete control of the game. The Tigers extended their run to 28-5, when a Rainey Nickel jumper put a temporary stop to the bleeding. By that point, OBU had opened a 68-47 lead, and the Tigers cruised to the finish line from there, emptying the bench late in the game en route to the 76-59 win.

Nickel's 17 points led the Jets in Saturday's game. The senior was the only Newman player to finish with double-figures in any category. Nikita Norwood led Newman's rebounding effort, grabbing six boards in the game.

Domino Miller led the Tigers with 20 points, while Gabby Coleman finished with six rebounds to lead her team.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 1-7 on the season. They will host MIAA foe Missouri Western Monday in a 6 p.m. contest at Fugate Gymnasium.
