GOODWELL, Okla. - The Newman women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season in a 72-61 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon inside Oscar Williams Field House in Goodwell, Okla.
Hadley Freeman tied her career-high of 17 points while
Rainey Nickel recorded a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win.
Jessica Forshee got things started for Newman (5-13, 3-4 Heartland), draining a jumper on the Jets' first possession of the game to spot the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Oklahoma Panhandle State (5-13, 2-5 Heartland) countered with five-straight points of their own to take a brief 5-2 lead, but the Jets responded with an 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead at the 13:37 mark of the first half. Melanie Brockleman free throw gave Newman its first double-digit lead of the game, 18-8, with 10:43 to play. Less than a minute later, a
Monique Pitts jumper pushed Newman's advantage to 15, 23-8, with 10:23 remaining in the opening frame, That's when the hosting Aggies decided they had seen enough. OPSU went on a 9-2 run over the next five minutes, trimming the Newman lead to eight, 25-17, with 5:42 left to play. Trailing 30-20 going into the final minute of the first half, the Aggies scored the final five points of the half, but the Jets still held a five-point, 30-25 advantage.
Two early three-pointers in the second half helped OPSU sneak to within two, 33-31, at the 17:45 mark of the second half, but a 7-2 spurt, capped by a
Hadley Freeman trey, helped push Newman's lead back to seven, 40-33, with 15:22 remaining on the clock. Newman maintained a lead of at least four for the next four minutes, and led by as many as nine after another Freeman long ball gave the blue-clad Jets a 51-42 lead with 11:24 still to play. Seemingly unphased, the Aggies put together an 8-1 run, thanks to six points from the charity stripe, and snuck back to within two, 52-50, inside of eight minutes to play, A minute later, two more Aggie free throws pulled the hosts to within one, 55-54, with 6:46 left, but another Freeman three-ball capped a 10-0 run that gave Newman a 65-55 edge with 2:43 remaining. From there, it was a matter of finishing the game, as the Jets picked up their first road win of the season, defeating OPSU 72-60.
Freeman drained five three's in the game, and led the Jets with 17 points, tying her career-high.
Rainey Nickel added 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while
Jessica Forshee finished one board shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Camille Washington led the Aggies with 14 points, while OPSU's Callie Schafer added a game-high 15 rebounds.
With the win, the Jets improve to 5-13 overall, and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. Newman returns home Thursday when they take on Heartland Conference front-runner St. Mary's in a 5:30 p.m. contest inside Fugate Gymnasium.
