WICHITA - Central Oklahoma hit .396 as a team, and dealt the Newman volleyball team a 3-0 loss Tuesday evening in front of 237 fans inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium.
Karol Marins led the Newman offensive effort with 12 kills in the loss.
Playing without eight players, including three starters, who were suspended for the game for violating team rules, Newman (9-12) gave Central Oklahoma (15-7) all it could handle in the first set. Junior hitter
Karol Marins opened her match with seven kills on 12 attacks with no errors on her way to a .583 hitting percentage as the Jets jumped out to an early lead. Slowly but surely, though, the Bronchos fought their way back into it, and ultimately snuck away with a 25-22 first-set win.
Newman's lack of available depth in the match began to take its toll over the rest of the match. The Jets' hitting percentage dropped in each remaining set, ultimately bottoming out at .000 in the final set as the Bronchos completed the sweep with set wins of 25-17 and 25-9.
Marins finished as Newman's leading offensive threat, posting 12 kills behind a .273 hitting percentage for the match.
Victoria Green added 12 kills, while
Chelsey Potter finished with nine kills in the match. Senior
Ashley Myers posted a season-high 29 assists in the match, falling just four assists short of a career-high outing.
Kristen White was Newman's leading defensive player, finishing with 11 digs in the losing effort.
Alex Richardson led the Bronchos with 12 kills.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 9-12 on the season. They will resume Heartland Conference play Thursday, traveling to Austin, Texas to take on league-leading St. Edward's. First-serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Recreation & Convocation Center.
