JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Rhea Codio scored a career-high 22 points as the Newman women's basketball team rebounded from Friday's loss to No. 17 Wayne State with an 84-74 win over the Lincoln Blue Tigers Saturday evening inside Lincoln's Jason Gym. The win was Newman's first-ever over the Blue Tigers in Jefferson City.
Though their roster consisted of just eight players, Lincoln (1-3) hung with Newman (6-2) through the early stages of Saturday's contest. A pair of
Philicia Kelly free throws at the 16:49 mark broke a 6-6 tie, and sparked a 5-0 spurt that gave Newman an 11-6 lead with 15:01 to play. The Blue Tigers countered with six-straight points, and took a 12-11 lead after a Bria Dillard lay-up at the 13:17 mark, but the Jets responded with an 11-4 run, capped by a
Bobbi Coleman three-pointer that gave Newman a 23-16 advantage with 8:46 still to play. Newman never trailed from that point forward, leading by as many as 14, 41-27, after a Kelly lay-up with 1:08 to play, but the Blue Tigers ended the half with four-straight points to narrow Newman's halftime lead to 41-32.
The Blue Tigers started the second half much the same way as they started the first, using an 8-2 run to pull within three, 43-40, at the 18:00 mark, but Newman needed just better than three minutes to push its lead back to 10, when a
Rhea Codio lay-up gave the Jets a 54-44 advantage with 14:42 to play. The Jets were never seriously threatened for the remainder of the contest. Newman took its largest lead of the night when a pair of
Nikita Norwood free throws gave the Jets a 15-point, 79-64 lead with 3:40 to play. From there the Jets held on for the 10-point, 84-74 win.
Rhea Codio scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Jets, thanks in part to a six-for-10 effort from beyond the arc.
Bobbi Coleman came off the bench to score 17 points, while
Philicia Kelly and
Sam Soyez rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers. Kelly finished with 12 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while Soyez posted a career-high 11 points and five rebounds.
With the win, the Jets improve to 6-2. They will enjoy a nine-day break before hitting the road yet again for a trip to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Drury Panthers in a 2 p.m. contest.
