JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Road struggles continued for the Newman women's basketball team as the Jets fell to the Lincoln Blue Tigers, 67-51, Saturday afternoon inside Jason Gym in Jefferson City, Mo.
Monique Pitts led all scorers with a career-high 21 points in the game.
Newman (6-18, 3-9 Heartland) jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the contest after
Jessica Forshee nailed a close-range jumper. Lincoln (11-12, 5-7 Heartland) countered with a 19-6 run of their own and took a 24-18 lead at the 6:52 mark. In true see-saw fashion, the Jets countered back with a 12-4 run of their own over the next four minutes, when a
Hadley Freeman jumper gave Newman a 30-28 lead. The Blue Tigers were up to the challenge, though, posting a 9-0 run over the final two minutes of the half, and taking a 37-30 lead into the locker room for halftime.
The Jets couldn't fight back in the second half. Lincoln opened the final frame by extending its lead to double digits by the 13:54 mark. Newman was able to trim the deficit to eight midway through the second half, but that's as close as the Jets could get. Lincoln closed the game on a 9-0 run en route to the 67-51 win.
Monique Pitts led all scorers in the contest, finishing with a career-high 21 points.
Melissa Brockleman added 16 points. Pitts and
Jessica Forshee led Newman's rebounding efforts with six boards each.
Stacey Smith led Lincoln with 20 points.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 6-18 on the season, and 3-9 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Thursday with their first ever trip to Fort Smith, Ark., for a 5:30 date with Heartland Conference provisional member Arkansas-Fort Smith.
