Volleyball Nets First Win over Rattlers, 3-1

Senior Chelsey Potter posted her fourth double-double of the season Thursday night.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman volleyball team picked up its first-ever win over Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's, taking a 3-1 decision from the Rattlers Thursday night at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas. Chelsey Potter posted her fourth double-double of the season, while freshman setter Lyndsey Martini set a career-high 42 assists in the win.

Newman (4-6, 1-0 Heartland) jumped all over St. Mary's (3-7, 0-1 Heartland) to start the match. After spotting the Rattlers the first point of the game, the Jets used a 10-5 run to take a 10-6 lead. St. Mary's wasn't phased, however. The Rattlers rallied behind a rowdy student section, and tied the set at 12-12, then scored four-straight to take a 16-12 lead. Newman couldn't get closer than four points from the Rattlers thoughout the remainder of the set, as St. Mary's went on for the 25-19 first-set win.

The Jets were only fooled once, however. Newman fought off an early second-set Rattler lead and rallied for a 25-21 second-set win to tie the match. That was enough to take the wind out of the St. Mary's sails. Newman picked up a convincing 25-14 win behind a .481 hitting percentage in the third set, and secured the win by holding off a late rally for a 25-22 win in the decisive fourth set.

Chelsey Potter recorded 16 kills to lead the Jets offensively, and added 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Lyndsey Martini posted a career-high 42 assists, and added 11 digs for her first double-double of her collegiate career. Kristen White was Newman's top defensive player, finishing with a team-high 24 digs, and was one of six Jets to post double-digit dig numbers.

As a team, Newman posted a season-high 52 kills, a season-high 90 digs, and tied a season-high with 49 assists, and posted a .250 hitting percentage with 52 kills on 148 attack attempts, and committed just 15 attack errors over four sets.

Newman will return to action Saturday, traveling deeper into southern Texas to take on Texas A&M International at noon at the Kinesiology Building in Laredo.
