Lady Lions Roar Past Jets

WICHITA - Haley Dotson and Jeana Farruggia each posted double digit kills in a four-set loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith Thursday night in Fugate Gymnasium. The loss was Newman's 20th of the season.

- The first set was a back-and-forth affair until the Jets pulled out to a 17-14 lead off kills from Katelyn Schmidtberger and Haley Dotson. UAFS fought back using two Jettie Stec kills to tie the match at 20-20. Newman responed with kills from Dotson and Karol Marins to take a 23-21 lead but the Lions answered with a three-point run to grab the lead 24-23. The Jets tied the set 26-26 but UAFS used kills from Stec and Heidi Luks to win the set 28-26.

- UAFS opened the second set by jumping out to a 11-4 lead off kills from Luks, Fabine Nass and Morgan Banner. The Jets managed to close the gap, using a Dotson service ace and two Lady Lion errors to narrow the lead to 14-10 but UAFS ran away with the set, winning 25-15.

- The Lady Lions opened the third set by racing to a 14-8 lead. Newman fought back using two kills from both Dotson and Schmidtberger to bring it within 18-16. UAFS responded with a kill from Jordan Erz to take a 19-16 lead but the Jets used kills from Marins and Farruggia to tie the set 20-20. After back-and-forth points Newman took a 25-24 lead and closed the set 27-25 on a Farruggia kill to force a fourth set.

- UAFS used three Newman errors and kills from Luks, Nass and Banner to open the final set with a 12-6 lead. The Jets fought back with kills from Farruggia and Allison Bailey to draw the set as close at 13-10 but the Lady Lions took control, winning the set and match on a Nass kill, 25-17.

- Haley Dotson led the Newman offense with 20 kills. Jeana Farruggia posted 12 for the Newman offense which hit .166 for the match, recording kills on 55 of its 157 attack attempts.  
- Gabby Loxterman set 41 of Newman's 48 assists and added 10 digs on the night for her sixth double-double of the season.
- Katelyn Schmidtberger led the Jets' defense with 16 digs. Kristen White was next with 13. The Jets finished with 65 digs as a team.
- UAFS out-blocked Newman 15-6.

With the loss the Jets fall to 4-20 on the season and 1-10 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Friday, October 28th at 7 p.m. against UAFS in Fugate Gymnasium.
