Jets Drop Regis in CCI Opener, 63-52

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A 22-point effort from Satoria Bell kept an undefeated season alive, and led the Newman women's basketball team to a 63-52 win over Regis Friday evening in the opening game of the Catholic Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Rockhurst University. Bell has now scored 20-or-more points in each of Newman's three games this season.

-Regis scored the first points of the game, draining a trey on its second possession of the contest to take a 3-0 lead. The Rangers extended their lead to 5-2 by the 17:31 mark of the first half, but a Bell three sparked a 21-2 run over the next 10 minutes, including an eight-minute Regis scoring drought, to take a 23-9 lead with 6:22 remaining in the first half.

-The Rangers answered Newman's run with an 11-2 run, and cut the Jets' lead to 25-20 in the final three minutes of the first half. Newman led 27-22 at the halftime intermission.

-Newman opened the second half with a 9-2 run, capped by a Tasha Cannon lay-up that gave the Jets a 36-24 lead with 16:15 remaining in the contest. Nine minutes later, a Bell lay-up gave Newman a 19-point, 54-35 lead with 7:29 left to play.

-Back-to-back Regis treys helped the Rangers cut the Newman lead to 11, 61-50, in the final minutes of the contest, but it was too little, too late as Newman picked up the 63-52 win.

-Satoria Bell led all scorers with 22 points. The senior guard has now scored 20 points in all three of Newman's contests this season.

-Tasha Cannon flirted with a triple-double for the second-straight game, finishing with 16 points and adding seven rebounds and seven steals.

-Anna Sonka hit four of Newman's five triples on her way to a career-high 12 points.

With the win, the Jets improve to 3-0 on the season. They will return to action Saturday, taking on NAIA power Avila in the third game of the Catholic Collegiate Invitational. Tip-time is slated for 12 p.m. inside Mason-Halpin Field House on the campus of Rockhurst University.
