Jets Suffer First Loss at No. 6 Wayne State, 76-67

Box Score WAYNE, Neb. - Visions of an undefeated season for the Newman women's basketball team evaporated Tuesday evening as the Jets dropped a 76-67 decision to No. 6 Wayne State on the Wildcats' home court in Wayne, Neb. Satoria Bell scored a team-best 22 points in the loss.

-After sinking a pair of administrative technical foul free throws to open the game, Wayne State jumped out to an early 9-4 lead at the 17:22 mark. A Satoria Bell trey nearly a minute later puled the Jets to within two, 9-7, with 16:26 still to play, but WSC responded with a 7-2 run to regain a 15-9 lead with 14:11 to play. The Wildcats held the lead, and extended it to as many as 10 when a Jennifer Kalbfell trey gave the hosts a 21-11 lead with 10:36 to play. But the Jets were far from finished. A Kianna Flannagan trey sparked an 11-0 run, capped by another Flannagain triple that allowed Newman to take a 22-21 lead with 7:42 left in the opening half. From there it was a race to halftime. A Bell lay-up in the closing seconds of the half gave the Jets a 32-30 lead.

-Wayne State scored the first eight points of the second half, and looked to be in firm control in the opening minutes of the final frame. Trailing 38-32, Alina Voronenko converted an old-fashioned three-point play that sparked an 11-4 run that gave Newman a 43-40 lead after a pair of Bell free throws at the 14:02 mark. WSC responded with four-straight points to take a 44-43 lead with 12:55 to play. This time, the Wildcats would not surrender the lead. After trailing by as many as four, an Alex Adekunle jumper tied the contest at 59-59 with 5:57 to play, but the Wildcats responded with five-straight points to take a 64-59 lead at the 4:33 mark. WSC led by as many as seven in the final minutes, but a pair of last-second free throws gave the Wildcats the 76-67 final margin.

-Satoria Bell led the Jets with 22 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Kianna Flannagan added a career-high 20 points to go along with three rebounds and four assists. Bell and Flannagan each hit eight shots from the field.

-Alina Voronenko was Newman's leading rebounder with a season-high eight boards, while Tasha Cannon added eight.

-As a team, Newman shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the field and 60 percent (9-15) from long range. The Jets out-rebounded Wayne State 35-32.

-Newman entered the game receiving votes in the NCAA Div. II National Poll for the first time in the school's history. The Wildcats entered the game ranked sixth in the same poll.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 4-1 on the season. They will return to action Friday, traveling to Joplin to take on Missouri Southern as part of the MSSU Pizza Hut/Fairfield Inn Classic, hosted by Missouri Southern State University. Tip-time is slated for 7 p.m.
