ODESSA, Texas -
Haley Dotson's 13 kills weren't quite enough to keep the Newman volleyball team from droppings its eighth-straight match. Texas-Permian Basin handed the Jets a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) loss Thursday evening at the Falcon Dome in Odessa, Texas.
- Sophomore
Haley Dotson got things started early, giving the Jets a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but Texas-Permian Basin rallied to take a 6-3 lead thanks to blocks on three Newman attack attempts. Newman kept things interesting until the 8-8 mark, but four-straight Newman attack errors helped UTPB earn a 12-8 lead. The Falcons returned the favor over the next four points, committing two attack errors and a ball handling error by setter Ariel Fralick, and allowing the Jets to tie the match at 12-12. The set remained tied until the 17-17 mark, but two-straight blocks and a Newman attack error gave the Jets a 20-17 deficit they could not recover from. UTPB took the first set, 25-21.
- The Falcons took the early 3-1 lead in the second set, but a
Kristen White service ace, combined with a Dotson kill tied the match at 3-3. UTPB went on to score the next four points in the frame thanks to back-to-back-to-back kills, and took a 7-3 lead. This time the Jets could not recover. The Falcons extended their lead to as many as 16-9 before cruising to the 25-20 second-set win.
- Texas-Permian Basin took control of the third set early. A Keely Brogdon kill broke a 3-3 tie, and started a three-point swing that gave the Falcons a 6-3 lead. UTPB extended that lead to 16-9, and looked to be in complete control of the set with a 24-13 lead, but Newman wasn't ready to roll over. The Jets rode a rare kill from libero
Kristen White, and followed that with a pair of
Chelsea Helena kills and a
Katelyn Schmidtberger service ace that sparked a 10-point rally that pulled the Jets to within 24-23 after another Helena kill, but Jamie Rodell ended the threat with a Falcon kill to secure the match for UTPB.
-
Haley Dotson led the Newman offense with 13 kills and hit .212 in the match. Dotson was the only Newman player to finish in double-digit kill totals.
-
Chelsea Helena played just one set in the contest, but made the most of her time on the court. The sophomore hit .600 in the match, recording kills on three of her five attempts.
-
Gabby Loxterman led the Jets with 30 assists in the contest as Newman's primary setter.
-
Kristen White and
Katelyn Schmidtberger each posted 12 digs to lead the Jets defensively.
- Newman hit .073 for the match, recording 39 kills and committing 30 kills on 123 attempts. UTPB hit .175 in the match.
With the loss, the Jets drop to 4-22 on the season, and 1-12 in Heartland Conference play. They will conclude their 2011 campaign with a trip to Goodwell, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. inside OPSU's Oscar Williams Fieldhouse.
