GOODWELL, Okla. - The Newman volleyball team ended a disappointing season on a high note Saturday, sweeping Oklahoma Panhandle State 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 on the Aggies' home court inside Oscar Williams Field House in Goodwell, Okla.
Haley Dotson led the Jets with 15 kills in the match.
- Newman bolted out to a 9-3 lead early in Saturday's first set, then extended that lead to 13-6 after an OPSU service error. OPSU battled back to within 16-12, but a
Katelyn Schmidtberger kill sparked a 5-1 Newman run that pushed the Jets back to a 21-14 advantage after a
Chelsea Helena kill. From there, Newman was able to cruise to the 25-20 opening-set win.
- The Jets needed little time to make their statement in the second set. An OPSU service error spotted the Jets the first point of the match, and Newman used that to spark a 7-1 run, capped by a Schmidtberger/
Haley Dotson block assist. A three-point spurt pulled the Aggies back to within three, 7-4, but the Jets answered with a 10-4 rally capped by a Schmidtberger ace that gave the Jets a 17-7 lead. But the Aggies refused to go quietly. After trading points, OPSU answered with a nine-point run to pull back within two, 19-17, but an Aggie attack error and back-to-back kills from Dotson and Schmidtberger erased the OPSU momentum, and led the Jets to a 25-18 second-set win.
- OPSU made the first move in Sunday's final set, taking an early 4-1 lead, but Newman pulled off four-straight points thanks to a pair of Schmidtberger kills to take a 5-4 lead. From there, neither team could build more than a one-point lead until an Aggie ace gave OPSU a 12-10 lead. The Aggies extended that lead to 16-12 on a Hanna Syling kill, but Dotson and
Jeana Farruggia combined for three kills that helped Newman take a short-lived 17-16 lead. The Jets finally broke free after a Dotson kill broke an 18-18 tie and sparked the first of five-straight Newman points that forced OPSU to play from a 23-18 deficit late in the set. This time, OPSU was unable to rally, and Newman clinched the match with a 25-22 third-set win.
