Bell Scores 32 as Jets Blast East Central, 79-63

Box Score WICHITA - The Newman offense exploded for 79 points Saturday afternoon, as the women's basketball team defeated the Tigers of East Central University, 79-63, inside Fugate Gymnasium.  Satoria Bell led the charge for the Jets, riding a 14-for-24 shooting perfornmance to a 32-point tally on the day. Tasha Cannon added 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Both teams came out looking sharp on offense in a first half that saw the lead change hands nine times.  After the Tigers sank a three pointer to open the game, Tasha Cannon put the Jets on the board with a jumper one minute in.  The teams traded blows back and forth for nearly 10 minutes until Satoria Bell sank a two point basket at the 11:31 mark to deadlock the score at 18-18.  After a media timeout, sophomore Sam Soyez knocked down a jumper to give the Jets the lead, where they would remain for the rest of the game.  Soyez then followed it up by draining Newman's only three pointer of the half.  East Central's offense continued to challenge the Jets, keeping Newman from pulling too far ahead.  Tasha Cannon's layup with 1:27 remaining ended the scoring in the first half, as the Jets led 40-35 after 20 minutes of play.

The Jets carried their momentum onto the floor to start the second half, as baskets from Bell, Cannon, and senior Ariella McGhee sparked an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 48-35.  The Tigers refused to go down without a fight, though, and responded with eight unanswered points of their own to bring the score to 48-43 at the 14:08 mark.  Again, Newman was up to the task, as two consecutive three pointers from Satoria Bell fueled a Jet rally which saw the Jets score 10 points over a four minute span to give them a 15 point advantage with five minutes remaining.  The Jets weren't done yet. Freshman Tyana Medema converted two free throws at the 2:22 mark to stretch the Jets' advantage to 23 points, their largest lead of the game.  Medema's free throws also marked the end of Newman's scoring on the night, finishing the game 79-63.

Ariella McGhee was one of three Jets to reach double digits in scoring on the night, as her, Cannon, and Bell were responsible for 58 of Newman's points on the day.  Cannon also converted six of her eight free throw attempts, as the Jets went 14-for-18 from the free throw line.  Sam Soyez added six assists in the game.

Jordan Thompson and Jourdan Clark led the Tigers in scoring with nine points apiece.

The victory brings the Jets to 7-2 on the season, and maintains their perfect record playing at home.  Their next match up will put that perfect record on the line, as they take on the Cardinals of William Jewell College on Saturday, December 10 in Fugate Gymnasium.
