WICHITA- The Newman women's basketball team will look to extend it's six-game winning streak Thursday when conference foe Texas A&M International travels to Wichita for a 7:30 p.m. showdown inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets, who are undefeated on their home court, hope to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
Flying High...
Since their 71-65 overtime loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Dec. 1, the Jets have won six-straight games behind strong performances from
Satoria Bell and
Tasha Cannon. During that stretch Newman has averaged 75.6 points per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field. For the season the Jets are shooting 44.5 percent from the field and averaging 70.6 ppg.
Newman has been dominant when playing in Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets are outscoring their opponents by an average of 74.2-53.7 points per game this season.
Boisterous Bench...
The Newman offense counts on strong performances from
Satoria Bell (23.5 ppg) and
Tasha Cannon (14.5 ppg) each game, but recently it's been the bench players that have helped put the Jets ahead. In Saturday's win over Arkansas-Fort Smith, junior
Kianna Flannagan stepped off the bench for 12 points and a team high four assists. Five days earlier against Ottawa, senior
Celeste Key dropped 12 points and grabbed eight boards as a reserve. Since their last loss on Dec. 1 the Newman bench players have averaged 21.0 ppg and have been a major contributing factor on both offense and defense.
Last Time Out...
Newman opened Heartland Conference play with a 64-59 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith Jan. 7 inside Fugate Gymnasium. Four Jets posted double figures with
Tasha Cannon scoring 17 points to lead all scorers and snatching 10 boards for her eighth double-double of the season.
Kianna Flannagan came off the bench for 12 points and a team-high four assists as Samantha Soyez and
Satoria Bell rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively. As a team the Jets shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the field and made 72.7 percent (16-22) of their free throws but were out-rebounded by the Lady Lions 49-38.
Scouting Texas A&M International...
The Dustdevils will enter Fugate Gymnasium coming off a 74-67 win over St. Edwards in Austin, Texas on Jan. 7. Samantha Chacon led the TAMIU offense with 23 points, shooting 7-9 from the field and going 3-3 from beyond the arc while Jennifer Johnson added 16-points and nine boards in the win. As a team the Dustdevils shot 50.0 percent (25-50) from the field and out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 35-27. For the season TAMIU is shooting 40.7 percent from the floor, and is averaging 78.7 points per game.
On the road the Dustdevils have gone 5-4, shooting 40.4 percent (240-593) and averaging 76.0 points while allowing their opponents to score 77.0 points per game.
Our House...
Thursday's matchup will be the seventh meeting between the Jets and the Dustdevils. Since the 2008-09 season Newman has split the series with TAMIU, going 2-1 at home for a 3-3 overall record against the Dustdevils. In their last meeting the Jets handed TAMIU a 72-51 loss inside Fugate Gymnasium.
