Box Score WICHITA- Four Jets scored in double figures as the Newman women's basketball team won it's first Heartland Conference game of the season.
Tasha Cannon led all scorers with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year.
Newman jumped out to an 11-1 lead to start the game after
Kianna Flannagan drained the first of two free throw attempts with 14:47 left to play. Arkansas-Fort Smith responded by using a six-point offensive run along with six additional points by Coby Hill to tie the game at 17-17 with 9:44 remaining. The Jets rallied opening up a 23-19 lead off a
Satoria Bell jumper, but the Lady Lions once again closed the gap tying the match 23-23 after two made free throws from Katie BenAmor. Newman regained control by closing the half on a 13-5 run, using jumpers from
Tasha Cannon and
Celeste Key to extend the lead to 36-28 by halftime.
After the Lady Lions' began the second half with a bucket by Coby Hill, Newman used lay-ups from
Alina Voronenko and
Celeste Key to open up it's largest lead of the game, 40-30. UAFS refused to go away and with 14:02 left in the contest they had whittled the Newman lead down to one, 42-41. The Jets' Samantha Soyez responded by burying two three point shots along with two jumpers by
Tasha Cannon to give the Jets a 51-45 lead with 9:22 remaining. The Lady Lions managed to claw back with baskets from Coby Hill and Vasha Sanders, and with 1:10 left in the contest Newman held just a two point lead, 58-56. The Jets closed the door after a
Tasha Cannon steal and basket forced UAFS to begin fouling, sending both
Kianna Flannagan and
Satoria Bell to the line to score the final points in the 64-59 Newman win.
Tasha Cannon led all scorers in the match, going 7-for-16 shooting for 17 points. Cannon added 10 rebounds to the mix to post her eighth double-double of the season. Samantha Soyez tied her season high with 11 points while
Satoria Bell and
Kianna Flannagan rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers. Bell scored 10 points while Flannagan added 12 points in the Newman victory.
Coby Hill led the Lady Lions in both points and rebounds, scoring 16 points with 12 rebounds.
As a team, Newman shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the field and 36.4 percent (4-11) from beyond the arc. The Jets converted 72.7 percent (16-22) of their free throws but were out-rebounded by the Lady Lions 49-38.
With the win the Jets improve to 12-2 on the season and 1-0 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. when they host conference foe Texas A&M International inside Fugate Gymnasium.
