Jets Begin Season With a 64-59 Victory

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Newman women's basketball started the 2012-13 season with a road win against Rockhurst, Saturday evening. Senior Kianna Flannagan led the Jets with 20 points and five assists in the 64-59 win.

It was a battle till the end with eight ties and six lead changes throughout the game. Newman's junior Tyahnna Higgs scored the first points of the game with two free throws. The Hawks came back with an 8-0 run, but the Jets came back in the 15th minute with a layup by Flannagan followed by a jumper from senior Sumayyah Muhammad. Another jumper by Muhammad at the 12th minute tied the game, 8-8. A 5-0 run for Rockhurst motivated Newman to force another tie at 13-13. The 5-0 run for the Jets consisted of a free throw from junior Chynna Ramelb, and a jumper with two added free throws from Flannagan. With three minutes left in the first half and the Jets down by five, Coach Spence called a 30 second timeout. The productive timeout led to a three-point shot by junior Sheba Goode, assisted by senior Anna Sonka. A dish from Flannagan to Ramelb for a Newman three-pointer tied the game 26-26 with a minute left in the first half. Newman freshman Jennifer Johnson fouled Rockhurst with 28 seconds remaining, giving the Hawks two free-throws that gave the 28-26 lead for the Hawks at half-time.

Until there was 12 minutes 54 seconds left in the game, the Hawks held a consistent lead. A steal by Goode led to a layup from Johnson. Two more layups from Ramelb and Flannagan made it a 42-41 game; Hawks in the lead. Once the Jets tied the game, 49-49 just under seven minutes left in the game, the team took and held on to the lead. It started with two free-throws by Flannagan followed by a jumper by Sonka. Then three consectutive assists from Flannagan - a three-pointer by Ramelb, layup by Higgs and a three-pointer by junior Cheniqwa Banks gave the Jets a 59-54 lead. In the final two minutes of the game, Flannagan scored four free-throws while Sonka scored one free-throw. The Hawks made a three-point shot, but it was not enough; Newman won 64-59.

"It's good to start the season with a win. We showed some toughness at times, which was good to see. We just have to keep working on the technical stuff we have been working on," stated Head Coach Darin Spence on the win.

The Jets finished with a 37.5 field goal percentage, 11 turnovers and 42 rebounds. Flannagan finished with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Ramelb finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and one assist.

Newman is 1-0, and will continue play on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Emporia State.
