Box Score Denver, Colo. – The Jets halted an early season slump on Saturday afternoon, defeating Colorado School of Mines 66-54 to snap a four-game skid.
Kianna Flannagan led the scoring charge for Newman with 18 points in the win.
Newman came out of the gates strong, opening the game on an 8-0 run thanks to a three-pointer from Flannagan and consecutive layups from
Alexandra Ciabattoni. Freshman
Jennifer Johnson got in on the action, adding two free throws to give the Jets an early 10-2 lead five minutes into the half. A pair of three pointers from
Sheba Goode and
Anna Sonka gave the Jets their largest lead of the half, an 18-5 margin at the 10:11 mark. The Orediggers would not back down so easily though, and went on a 15-6 run to cut Newman's lead to 26-25 with three minutes left. Ciabattoni got the Jets back on track with a layup, and a last-second jumper from Flannagan gave Newman a 32-28 lead going into halftime.
The back-and-forth scoring action to conclude the first frame carried through the break, as the teams traded shots over the first five minutes, locked at 38-38 at the 15:26 mark. Jumpers from Sonka and Flannagan sparked a seven-point run which appeared to put the Jets ahead for good, but the Orediggers answered right back with their own 7-0 run to level the score at 47-47 with nine minutes remaining in the game. Sonka broke the tie with her second three-pointer of the game, and that put the Jets ahead for good. Newman's defense held strong, limiting Colorado Mines to just seven points over the final ten minutes of the game.
Kianna Flannagan led the Jets with 18 points behind a 7-for-8 effort from the floor. Ciabattoni added seven points to go along with eight rebounds on the day. Freshman
Naomi Rosales had eight boards of her own in addition to six points in her first career start.
Chynna Ramelb contributed another strong effort, notching seven points and six rebounds while adding four steals in her first start of the season.
As a team, the Jets shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the floor, and outrebounded Colorado Mines 45-38. Newman shot 29.4 percent (5-17) from three-point land, and 56.5 percent (13-23) from the charity stripe.
Angie Charchalls led the Orediggers with 22 points on the day, including 5-14 from downtown and a 5-6 effort from the free throw line.
With the victory, the Jets move to 2-4 on the season (0-0 Heartland). Newman returns home after a long six-game road trip to host McMurry University on this Thursday Nov. 29 in their first home game this season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
