Softball Inks Three for 2013-14

Wichita – The Newman University Softball family would like to announce Lauren Iverson (Brown Mackie College, Salina, KS), Natalie Vasquez (Des Moines, Iowa), and Hyedi Viehmann (Graham, TX) to their family for the start of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Lauren Iverson | Third Base/Catcher | Brown Mackie College |Rowlett, TX
Lauren Iverson will transfer her talents from Brown Mackie College to Newman University. Lauren will add two years of college softball experience to the Jets next season, where she played third base and catcher at Brown Mackie. In her freshman season, she was named team captain and led her team with 41 RBI's, .456 on-base percentage, and 5 home runs.

Lauren has maintained a 3.4 GPA and is planning on majoring in sports communication.

“Lauren is a huge add to the roster for the 2013-2014 season,” said Coach Whitlock. “She brings a veteran hard working mentality that will help shoot us to success. Lauren comes in with a stick that is game changing and a glove to help replace senior powerhouse Erin Monday at third. We are looking forward to what she can accomplish in the Heartland conference wearing a Newman University jersey.”

Natalie Vasquez | Pitcher | Des Moines, IA
Natalie Vasquez travels from Des Moines, Iowa to Wichita, KS to join the Newman Jets in flight. In her freshman season, Natalie was voted MVP and Miss Positive by her teammates. In 2012, Natalie was named first team All-Conference in 5A.

Academically, she has found a permanent home on the Honor Roll. She has also received an academic letter for her achievements.

“Natalie brings a dynamic to the team that no one else has. Her smile, positivity, and go get'em attitude is hard to beat and I think that she will be extremely successful with the plan we have for her in the Newman softball program,” said Coach Whitlock. “She's a pitcher that shuts down batters and spins them into the ground, and you can't find that everywhere. As a young developing pitcher, we see rising potential in her future.”

Hyedi Viehmann | Catcher/Utility | Graham, TX
Hyedi Viehmann comes to the Jet family with both an academic and athletic attack. Hyedi played 3 years of varsity softball for Graham High School and was named All-District Catcher each year. Hyedi led the district in runs last season and looks to continue her success during her senior season. Over the past three seasons, Hyedi has accumulated a batting average of .538, 131 runs, 95 RBI's, slugging percentage of .655 and a fielding percentage of .980.

Academically, Hyedi is highly involved in debate, FFA, and several other clubs. She has received the Graham Lions Club Scholar Award for the past three years, where she has maintained a minimum of a 3.5 GPA. Hyedi plans on majoring in math with a minor in pre vet.

“Hyedi is a young, eager, and hardworking catcher. Her spitfire behind the plate will inspire and lead our team into battle next season,” said Coach Whitlock. “She has been taught very well by her past coaches and I cannot wait to coach her amazing attitude and skill. Not only is her defense a force to be reckoned with, but her offense is just as solid. Her ability to score runs will be key component to our rise in the Heartland Conference.”
