Women's Basketball Snaps Losing Streak at TAMIU, 67-54

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak Saturday with a 67-54 win over Heartland Conference foe Texas A&M International. Alina Voronenko scored a season-high 17 points in the contest.

Tasha Cannon scored the first six points for the Jets and opened up a 6-1 lead three minutes into the game. The Dustdevils responded with a nine-point run off two Samantha Chacon baskets to pull ahead, 10-6, with 15:12 to play in the first half. The teams traded baskets until the 10:24 mark when the Jets' Ariella McGhee sparked a six-point run and pushed the Newman lead to 18-12, midway through the first half. TAMIU battled back, and with 4:05 left to play in the half, took a 23-22 lead off an Angie Villaneva three. Newman returned fire, and with 1:49 remaining trailed 25-24. The Dustdevils ended the first half with another Villaneva three and went into the halftime break leading 28-24.

Newman scored the first points of the second half, but the teams went back-and-forth until the 15:28 mark when a Satoria Bell layup tied things up at 32-32. The teams continued to trade baskets until the Jets opened up a 46-38 lead off a Celeste Key layup with 9:45 remaining. The Dustdevils tried to rally, but Newman continued to have an answer and used layups from Cannon and Voronenko to push the lead to as many as 58-46 with 4:42 left to play. TAMIU whittled the lead back down to 58-50 with 3:08 remaining, but the Jets made seven-of-eight from the charity stripe in final minutes of play to clinch the 67-54 win.

Newman had three players score in double digits. Tasha Cannon led all scorers with 23 points and seven boards while Alina Voronenko dumped in a season-high 17 points and pulled down five boards. Satoria Bell added 10 points and two rebounds.

As a team, Newman shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field and 74.1 percent (20-27) from the free throw line. Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds.

The Dustdevils had two players post double digit scoring efforts. They were led by ReNikia Meshack's 19 points.

With the win Newman improves to 18-5 on the season and 7-2 in Heartland Conference play. They will return home to close out the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a visit from St. Edward's Feb. 16. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
