Box Score WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team overtook the Falcons of University of Texas-Permian Basin with a 69-67 victory to earn at least a share of the Heartland Conference title Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Satoria Bell led all scorers with 32 points.
Newman (20-5, 9-2 Heartland) started the game with a basket by senior
Tasha Cannon and gained a 6-2 advantage in the first two minutes on the court. Texas-Permian Basin (18-7, 8-3 Heartland) responded with a four-point run to tie the game at 6-6 at the 16:40 mark of the first half. Newman's
Alina Voronenko sparked a 10-point run that took the Jets to a 18-8 lead at the 13 minute mark. The Jets took an 11-point advantage after a steal and eventual basket by
Satoria Bell, which gave them a 33-22 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Falcons battled back in the last few minutes to take their first lead of the game, 39-38, at the 27-second mark. The half ended with a basket by
Satoria Bell to make the score 39-38 in favor of Newman heading into halftime.
The teams continued to trade off baskets at the start of the second half until the 13-minute mark, when a three-point basket by Lauren Unger gave UTPB a 48-47 advantage over the Jets. The game continued to stay at a one-point margin until the Falcons tipped off an eight-point run with a basket by Taniqua Ards. Newman trailed by six with four minutes remaining in the game and tied the score at 67 with a basket by
Satoria Bell with one minute remaining.
Alina Voronenko took the last basket of the game at the ten second mark, clenching the Jet's 69-67 victory.

Ellen Traylor took two steals in the game, and
Tasha Cannon added 8 rebounds for the Jets.
As a team, Newman shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. Newman pulled down 30 rebounds.
The Falcons were led by Tammy Acosta, who scored 17 points and 4 steals. UTPB was 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the charity stripe.
With the win Newman improves to 20-5 on the season and 9-2 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets return to action next Thursday as they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State at 5:30 pm inside Fugate Gymnasium.
