Box Score WICHITA - The Newman women's basketball team clenched the 2012 Heartland Conference title with a 100-48 victory over the Aggies from Oklahoma Panhandle State University Thursday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Satoria Bell led all scorers with 17 points.
Oklahoma Panhandle State University (5-20, 2-9 Heartland) took the first basket of the evening in the first seconds of the game, but Newman (21-5, 10-2 Heartland) never let them touch the lead again. Newman continued to drill one basket after another, including a 10-point run that gave the Jets a 29-8 advantage at the 11-minute mark in the first half. Kiana Flannagan sunk one from outside the arc to make the score 34-10 in favor of Newman at the 9-minute mark. The Jets took their biggest lead of the half with 3:40 left in the period when
Anna Sonka's lay-up gave Newman a 50-20 lead. The half ended with a two-point basket by the Aggie's Tra'Niqua Dishmon giving the Jets a 54-31 lead heading into the locker rooms.
The Jets never looked backed in the second half, charging ahead in the first few minutes with two consecutive baskets by
Alina Voronenko at the 17-minute mark of the second half. Newman then made a 16-point run to obtain a 70-34 edge at the 14:45 mark. Newman continued to drill the baskets, including another 3-pointer by
Kianna Flannagan that gave the Jets a 50-point, 94-44 lead. The game ended in triple digits with a basket by
Celeste Key, making the final score 100-48, Newman.
Satoria Bell led all scorers with 17 points and a 5-6 effort from the free throw line.
Tasha Cannon made her double-double for the evening with 11 points and rebounds.
Kianna Flannagan and
Satoria Bell both took three steals, while
Tasha Cannon made eight assists in the game.
As a team, Newman shot 62.9 percent (44-70) from the field and 64.7 (11-17) from the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Aggies 49-41.
Oklahoma Panhandle State was led by Carmela Garcia, who took 13 points and 6 steals for the evening. The Aggies were 24.7 percent (18-73) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-14) from the line.
With the win Newman has now won back-to-back Heartland Conference Championships. They improve their record to 21-5 and 10-2 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets return to action next week when they host the Heartland Conference tournament inside Fugate Gymnasium. Official seeds and game times will be announced Saturday afternoon.
