LCU Upends NU Volleyball, 3-0

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas – Newman volleyball played Lubbock Christian tight, but couldn't get a set win, falling 3-0 to the Lady Chaps on Thursday (Oct. 24) at Rip Griffin Center. The Lady Jets dropped to 11-9 and 5-7 in the Heartland Conference while the Lady Chaps improved to 12-8 and 9-3 in the conference.
 
In the first set, the Lady Jets held a 13-12 advantage and went on a 7-2 run to push to a 20-14 score. An Ashley Gonzalez kill gave NU set point at 24-20, but LCU closed the set on a 6-0 run to win, 26-24.
 
The run continued into the second set, as the Lady Chaps scored the first five points. In total, LCU went on an 11-0 run between the two sets. Down 9-3, NU made a run of 8-2 to close to within one at 11-10. With the score 13-12, LCU scored five straight points to go up 18-12. At 22-17, the Lady Chaps got three straight points to win set two, 25-17.
 
In a close third set with the score even at 10-10, the Lady Jets went on a quick 3-0 run to take a 13-10 advantage, forcing LCU into a timeout. With NU still up by three at 18-15, LCU scored four straight to get back into the set and take a 19-18 lead. The score was knotted at 23-23 and then the Lady Chaps got back-to-back kills to win the set, 25-23, and win the match, 3-0.
 
Gonzalez led NU with eight kills and hit .238. Alexis Litts totaled a double-double with a match-high 17 digs and a team-high 24 assists.
 
LCU's Kacey Deterding had an outstanding match for LCU with 18 kills, a match high, and hit .302. She added four blocks.
 
NU travels to Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday (Oct. 26) for a 12 p.m. match in Odessa, Texas.
