Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman volleyball team fell, 3-0, to St. Edward's on Thursday (Sept. 26) at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Lady Jets dropped to 4-6 and 1-4 in the Heartland Conference.
 
The host Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead in the first set, going up 9-2. SEU controlled the rest of the first set as NU couldn't get any closer than four points, and the Hilltoppers took set one, 25-21.
 
SEU started fast again in the second set, pulling out to an 8-2 advantage. The Lady Jets closed the gap to three at 18-15 on a Lexi Kuharich service ace. NU got as close as two in the set at 23-21 after a block by Gaylynn Jones and Shelby Zoglman. SEU pushed to set point, 24-21, and, after a NU kill by Jones, got a kill for the 25-22 set two victory.
 
In the third set, the Lady Jets went ahead 5-2 early on. The Hilltoppers responded to tie the match at 6-6 and then went ahead 10-7. Back-to-back Ashley Gonzalez kills pulled the Lady Jets to within one at 10-9. It remained close at 20-19 and 21-20 after two more Gonzalez kills. Three-straight SEU points pushed the Hilltoppers to match point at 24-20. NU tried to rally with back-to-back kills from Shelby Zoglman and Jeana Farruggia. A Lady Jet error gave the Hilltoppers a 25-22 third set win and a 3-0 match victory.
 
Gonzalez led NU with 14 kills, which tied for a match high, and hit .346 in the match. Gaylynn Jones finished with a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Hitting a team-high .462, Jarin Braithwait totaled seven digs. Also with a double-double was Alexus Litts with a team-high 24 assists and 12 digs. Tori Alderson had 13 digs to lead NU.
 
The Lady Jets go to McMurry on Saturday for a 12 p.m. match in Abilene, Texas.
