ODESSA, Texas – The Newman women's soccer team picked up its first Heartland Conference win with a 2-0 victory at Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday (Oct. 18) at the UTPB Soccer Field. The Lady Jets moved to 5-6-1 on the season and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference.
NU went ahead in the 36th minute on an own goal. A cross from
Maricela Ruvalcaba was knocked in by a Falcon defender for the 1-0 NU edge.
The Lady Jets doubled the lead to 2-0 late in the first half as
Courtney Galliher scored 20 seconds before halftime in the 45th minute.
Daniela Nieto and
Jasmine Woodruff both had assists on the goal.
The first half was dominated by the Lady Jets as NU totaled 11 shots to three from the Falcons. Six of the NU shots were on goal in the first stanza. For the match, the Lady Jets held a 18-8 advantage in shots – 10 shots on goal.
Haley Borchers got the shutout win in goal, making five saves. It's her first shutout of the season in her third start.
NU continues its road trip on Monday (Oct. 20) at Lubbock Christian in Lubbock, Texas. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
