Harvey’s Career Match Lifts NU Volleyball to 3-1 Win

WICHITA – Freshman Emily Harvey totaled a match-high and career-high 19 kills in a 3-1 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday (Oct. 18) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets moved to 10-10 and 6-6 in the Heartland Conference, moving to fifth in the conference standings. UTPB dropped to 9-12 and 5-7 in the conference.
 
The Lady Jets gained an early 2-0 lead after winning sets one and two. NU took set one, 25-19, and won set two, 25-23. In the opening set, NU pulled out to a 10-3 lead with strong blocking. Four points came on NU blocks. Alexis Roecker (three) and Ashley Gonzalez had four total kills in the starting spurt. The Falcons slowly chipped away, getting to within two at 14-12, however, NU scored four straight points to go up 18-12 and force a UTPB timeout. With the Lady Jets in front 22-19, NU ended the set with three points, including another block and a kill from Gonzalez, for a 25-19 win.
 
Trailing 19-17 in set two, NU gained the lead with a 4-0 run and a 21-19 edge. Harvey, Roecker and Braithwait all had kills in the run. The Falcons tied the score at 21-21, but NU got set point at 24-21 after three straight attack errors from UTPB's Puava Tulau. After two points from UTPB for a 23-24 score, Roecker put the set away with a kill for a 25-23 set two win.
 
The Falcons edged out the Lady Jets in the third set for a 25-23 win. UTPB started the set by building a 14-8 lead. After slowly cutting the deficit to 22-19, the Lady Jets went on a 4-0 run to take a 23-22 edge. Harvey had a kill and an ace in the run. The Falcons scored three straight points to win the set, 25-23.
 
The fourth set was close early, but NU went on a 10-2 run to win the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1. With the score knotted at 15-15, NU took control with a 7-0 run. Harvey started the run with back-to-back kills and then NU used strong blocking to register two points and a 20-15 lead. Gonzalez put down a kill for a 21-15 advantage, and UTPB used a timeout. Harvey gave NU a 22-15 advantage with another kill. The Falcons scored two of the next three points for a 23-17 score then NU got back-to-back kills for the 25-17 set win. Harvey tallied another kill, and Gaylynn Jones had the final kill.  
 
Roecker finished with a double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs. Shelby Zoglman added 10 kills, hitting .400. Lexi Kuharich tallied a match-high 51 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Anna Burton dug up a match-high 26 balls.
 
NU finished with a season-high 11 blocks. Gonzalez and Braithwait each had five total blocks.
 
The Lady Jets hit .247 in the match, including .304 in the fourth set. Harvey hit .341.
 
NU is on the road for two straight matches. The Lady Jets play in a non-conference match on Wednesday (Oct. 22) at Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
