Men’s Soccer Ends LCU’s conference winning streak with 1-0 Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman men's soccer team ended the nation's active conference leading winning streak with, downing Lubbock Christian, 1-0, on Monday (Oct. 20) at the LCU Soccer Field. The Chaps had won 10-straight Heartland Conference matches before today's loss. The Jets moved to 9-4-1 and 3-2 in the Heartland Conference. LCU dropped to 6-4-1 and 4-1 in the conference.
 
Taylor Henry scored the match-winning goal early in the second half. The tally came in the 51st minute with the assist to Jourdin Swinford. The goal is Henry's third of the season and first match winner.
 
Steven Hamersky got the shutout win in goal, making six saves. The shutout is the Jets fifth of the season and the first shutout since a 4-0 win over Barclay College on Sept. 22.
 
The Jets dominated play in the first half, holding a 12-6 advantage in shots. NU, however, couldn't get any of their three shots on goal in the back of the net. The second half was more even in play as LCU held a 9-5 edge. Late in the contest, Hamersky came up big with two saves and the defense held for the shutout win.
 
Luca Anelli had two opportunities with two shots on goal, and Richard Wincer also had a shot on target.
 
NU finished this road trip with a 2-0 mark after defeating Texas-Permian Basin, 3-2, on Saturday.
 
The Jets end the regular season with three straight home matches. The stretch starts on Saturday (Oct. 25) with Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats will be provided.
