WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team scored two early goals and held on for a 2-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Monday afternoon (Oct. 27) at Wilkins Field. The Jets won their fourth straight and moved to 11-4-1 overall and 5-2 in the Heartland Conference.
Luca Anelli put the Jets in front, 1-0 in the 11th minute on a shot from 10 yards after a pass from
Kerbson Lubin. NU increased the edge to 2-0 with its second goal in the 19th minute.
Taylor Henry sent in a cross from the right corner, and
Javier Rojas made a run down the middle of the field, firing a shot to make it 2-0.
The Jets held a 2-0 lead after the first stanza. NU edged out DBU in first half shots, 5-4.
DBU pulled to within one score early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, the Patriots scored on a quick free kick from 20 yards.
In the second half, NU once again totaled five shots to four from DBU. For the 90 minutes, the Jets held a 10-8 edge in shots.
Senior
Steven Hamersky, who was the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week last week, made one save and allowed the one goal in 90 minutes in goal.
The Jets end the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 1) against Rogers State at Wilkins Field. The Senior Night contest starts at 7:30 p.m. Live stats will be provided.
