WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team lost in straight sets, 3-0, to St. Mary's on Thursday (Oct. 30) at Fugate Gymnasium. The loss snaps NU's three-match winning streak at home, and the Lady Jets dropped to 12-12 and 7-7 in the Heartland Conference.
The Rattlers hit .325 in the first set to pull away for a 25-19 win. NU hit only .073 with nine kills and six errors. StMU finished with 17 kills and four errors.
In the second set, StMU once again got the win by the score of 25-21. The Rattlers nearly hit .300 for the second straight set, finishing at .293. The Lady Jets had their best hitting percentage of the match at .208 with 15 kills and five errors.
The third set was the closest of the match as the Rattlers won, 27-25. Neither team held more than a four-point advantage during the set. After the Lady Jets gained a 22-21 edge, StMU scored the next two points to go in front 23-22. Two straight NU points gave them match point at 24-23. However, the Rattlers were aided by two NU errors to go up 25-24. An
Alexis Roecker kill tied the score at 25-25 then StMU got a kill for match point at 26-25. An Alexis Litts' error lifted the Rattlers to the 27-25 set three win.
For the match, StMU hit .254 with 46 kills and 13 errors on 130 attempts. The Lady Jets finished hitting .153 with 41 kills and 20 errors on 137 attempts.
Kelsey Huber of StMU totaled a match-high 11 kills and hit .345. Rachael Scicchitano has 23 assists, and Victorria Guerrero finished with a match-high 24 digs.
The lady Jets were led by
Gaylynn Jones with nine kills. Roecker added eight kills, hitting .375. Litts totaled a double-double of 28 assists and 12 digs.
Anna Burton tallied a team-high 21 digs.
NU ends its home schedule on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M International. Two seniors:
Tori Provencio and
