WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team allowed four first half goals, falling 4-1 to Texas A&M International on Saturday (Oct. 4) night at Wilkins Field. The Heartland Conference loss drops the Jets to 0-1 in the conference and 6-3-1 overall.
The Dustdevils scored first in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick from their goalkeeper, Camilo Botero. The penalty kick came after a hand ball in the box by NU. Less than 5 minutes later, TAMIU doubled the score to 2-0 on a goal by Aaron Zuniga in the 27th minute. The goals kept coming for the Dustdevils as they went up 3-0 a minute later with a goal in the 28th minute. A header by Ryan Hodgson in front was the third goal. The final TAMIU tally happened in the 39th minute as Jovany Macia scored for a 4-0 lead.
The Jets scored their only goal in the 76th minute.
Gefte Blanc knocked in a header on a corner kick from
Vitor Okamoto. It was Blanc's fourth goal of the season.
TAMIU held a 7-3 shot advantage in the first half with five shots on goal. In the second half, NU dominated in shots, holding a 9-4 edge, including six shots on goal. NU totaled 10 corner kicks to three from TAMIU.
The Jets continue Heartland Conference play on Monday (Oct. 6), hosting St. Mary's at 2:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats will be provided.
