Luca Anelli scored the match-winning golden goal in double overtime to lift Newman men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's on Monday (Oct. 6) afternoon at Wilkins Field. The Jets moved to 7-3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference.
Anelli scored the match-winning goal in the 104th minute, slicing through three StMU defenders and knocking in a shot to the left side. It's Anelli's fifth goal of the season and second match winner.
The Rattlers forced overtime with a goal in the 88th minute for a 1-1 tie. StMU's Ignacio Fernandez scored with the assist to Alexis Santamaria.
NU went up 1-0 in the first half.
Kerbson Lubin scored his team-high seventh goal in the 33rd minute. He knocked it in with a back heel shot to the left post.
Taylor Henry got the assist.
The Jets controlled play in the first half, totaling 10 shots to four from the Rattlers. In the second half, it was StMU that controlled play, tallying nine shots to one from NU. The only shot in the overtimes was the goal from Anelli.
Steven Hamersky got the win in goal for Newman, making seven saves and allowing the one goal. He moved to 4-1-1 on the season.
NU goes on the road for three-straight contests. The Jets take on St. Edward's on Saturday (Oct. 11) at 2:30 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
