WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team fell, 75-47, to Fort Hays State on Tuesday (Nov. 25) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped to 2-2 on the season, and the Tigers moved to 4-1.
With the Jets trailing by one at 5-4 after a
Kesha Buckner layup at the 17:36 mark, the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to open up a 17-6 lead with 13:53 left in the half. Back-to-back NU layup cut the deficit to seven at 17-10 midway through the first half, but FHSU went on a 12-3 spurt to open up its largest lead of the half at 29-13 with 5:31 remaining in the first stanza. The Tigers took a 16-point lead into half at 38-22.
A three-point play by FHSU increased the advantage to 19 at 41-22 early into the second half. The Jets slowly closed the gap to eight points over the next 8 minutes to make it 47-39 with a 17-6 run.
Sierra Maykus made two 3s during the spurt and
Mali Wright scored two baskets.
FHSU's Chelsea Mason hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to put FHSU up 11 at 50-39 at the 11:12 mark, and the Tigers led by double digits for the rest of the game, pulling to the 75-47 win.
Kate Lehman of FHSU totaled a game high in many categories. Her 24 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks were all game highs. She added four assists and one steal in 32 minutes.
The Tigers shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the field. FHSU was perfect from the free throw line until Taylor Menke missed the team's final attempt with 18 seconds remaining. The Tigers finished 17-of-18 from the line.
For the game, NU shot 28.3 percent (17-60) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-14) from 3-point range. NU also struggled from the free throw line, going 50 percent (8-16).
Sierra Maykus scored a team-high 11 points and hit three 3-pointers.
DaJah Thompson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Jets return to action on Saturday (Nov. 29) against Washburn at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
