AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman men's soccer team advanced to the Heartland Conference Championship with a 1-0 win over St. Mary's on Friday (Nov. 7) in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference tournament, hosted by St. Edward's. 
Lucas Hanson scored the match-winning goal, his fourth goal of the season. The Jets moved to 13-4-1 on the season, their best season in NCAA Division II school history. 
The lone goal came in the 22nd minute as Hanson knocked in a loose ball off a corner kick, giving the Jets a 1-0 advantage midway through the first half. 
In the first half, NU held a 7-5 advantage on shots, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. In the second half, StMU pushed more, getting nine shots to three shots for NU. For the 90 minutes, StMU totaled 14 shots to 10 from NU. 
Senior goalkeeper 
Steven Hamersky got the shutout win in goal. Hamersky made some huge saves, totaling six stops in the 90 minute shutout. On the season, Hamersky moved to an 8-2-1 record.

Jamie Barkway and 
Brandon Bozarth allowed the Jets to record their seventh shutout of the season. Senseman and Barkway were both named All-Heartland Conference yesterday, and Barkway was selected as the Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year. 
NU plays in the Heartland Conference Championship on Sunday (Nov. 9) at 12 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field in Austin, Texas. Live video and stats will be provided for the championship.
